When the homeowner/interior designer found this midcentury home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protégé, architect, and landscape architect Kaneji Domoto, it was in utter disrepair. It had been abandoned and suffered from burst pipes and significant interior damage. There were even discussions about tearing it down. But after walking the property, the team saw great potential in the home’s original, sometimes quirky details and its unique siting. The glass-wrapped living room cantilevers over a small stream in a manner likely impossible to replicate under modern zoning requirements.

The site is that of a typical Flemish home in an equally typical suburban neighborhood bordering the countryside. The client is a retired art books publisher willing to bring his collection home. The design proposes a separate architectural entity: a wedge-shaped volume clad in metal.

London-based architecture practice ConForm has completed the unique refurbishment of a terraced house in Hampstead, resulting in a new tactile interior scheme contrasted by a distinct, monolithic extension that appears entirely hewn from marble.

In the developed neighborhood of Upper Mount Royal, the Garden Garage addresses a typical conflict between yard and garage by hybridizing these typologies into two intersecting landscapes. With an underused corner of their property that had excellent sun exposure and site access, the client approached Studio North with a request to create a building that enhanced both the backyard and driveway uses. The new garage and shed roof allows the two planes of the driveway and the backyard to coincide and ultimately enhance both programs.

Exposition Heights is a complete transformation of a Seattle split-level into a two-story modern gable home. Despite a tight budget, the comprehensive remodel almost doubles the square footage of the original 1960s home, accommodates urban density challenges, and demonstrates how older homes can be adapted to meet the changing needs of their owners.

Amid Pajot greenery, we let our creativity run wild on an old farmhouse. The building consisted of a house and a workshop with adjoining outbuildings around a courtyard.
