Iconik Apartments / Edit! architects

March 22, 2024 Valeria Silva 0

Iconik, a nine-story apartment building designed by the architectural studio edit!, is located in the Karlín district in Prague at one of the last empty sites resulting from the millennium flood. The plot is situated on the main avenue of a district, that ranks among the most desirable Prague locations, and which has undergone a major architectural and social transformation in the last two decades – once an industrial district transformed into a hip center full of start-ups offices, restaurants and nightlife with its former Secession buildings and factories being now home to top-level gastro and independent galleries. The proposed building reflects the rich history of the formerly industrial area in its expression, and its material concept is based on both the historical plotting of the built-up area and the irregular height arrangement of the crown cornices typical for Karlín.

“The architectural form of Upper House draws inspiration from the Moreton Bay Fig, with ‘architectural roots’ taking us on a journey from our ancient past at its base, up to the future of vertical living. Topped with biodiverse outdoor areas, wellbeing retreat and social hub, Upper House addresses what is referred to as connection deficit,” says architect Koichi Takada. Upper House in South Brisbane, Australia, is a multi-residential project by Koichi Takada Architects and delivers 188 apartments over 33 stories. The expressive architectural form drew inspiration from native flora and signals a new era in urban multi-residential design, where connection to nature, quality of design, resident wellbeing, and environmental sustainability align.

Conceived as a tower crafted from a pair of tall, slender forms, 88 Walker contrasts with the wider proportions of its neighbors, acting as a focal point on the skyline. The development lies at the heart of the North Sydney CBD and is integrated with the heritage Firehouse hotel. Together, the 2-story former fire station, now a heritage pub, and 50-story mixed-use tower narrate the changing story of North Sydney’s growth from an early colonial suburb on the opposite shore from the town of Sydney to a major commercial component of the global city Sydney has become, housing some of the world’s largest corporate tenants in an evolving and vibrant CBD.
