Bethnal Green Mission Church in London’s East End represents a ground-breaking model for contemporary places of worship in dense urban environments. Appearing as a robust urban block, the building is actually a complex mixed-use development with a church at its heart. The project was funded by the creation of 14 residences – known as the Macpherson Apartments after the church’s founder – as well as co-working facilities for charities, a community hall, café, community kitchen, foodbank store and vicarage. The new project, which replaces a former 50s building on the site, was designed by emerging architectural practice Gatti Routh Rhodes for a partnership between the Bethnal Green Mission Church and developers Thornsett.

StudioAC coverts Toronto church into minimal Pape Loft

Toronto firm StudioAC has overhauled part of a church in the city, creating a contemporary two-bedroom home with a curved balustrade clad in pale wood. The converted religious building now houses the Pape Loft, which takes its name from an informal term for a Roman Catholic priest or pope, often used in Scotland in the mid-1900s.

BIG Reveals Skyscraper Design for First Project in South America

Soon to become the tallest building in Quito, IQON is Bjarke Ingels Group‘s first project to be built in South America. Currently undergoing construction, the largely residential building is a curved tower with gradually protruding balconies. Encased between the dense city and the park, the self-dubbed “urban tree farm” aims not only to encompass the surrounding views of the volcanoes and nature beyond but also to integrate the landscape within the building itself.
