Herencia Progresiva Building / Manada Architectural Boundaries

September 8, 2020 Andreas Luco 0

Architectural practice oscillates continuously between planning ahead and solving ad-hoc. It combines exacting structural grids with loose infill, clarity in layout with free compositional elements, careful planning with smart improvisation. It is a constant balancing, pivoting and turning between the calculated effectiveness of the structural engineer and the sensible intuitions of the artist. In the end, the core of an architect’s work is not so much defined by specific design solutions or material applications (these can change according to program, site, client and mood), but by their working method: by the procedural design methodology, by the way a design process is structured and by what is defined in which exact moment. Many architects are intrigued and fascinated by the mindful planning and meticulous preparation of the construction process. They believe in the imperative rule of the architectural plan, of exact specifications and detailed drawings. They take pride and joy in the precise control and registration of spatial and material definitions.

Residential Block in Paupys / Architektüros linija

September 8, 2020 Andreas Luco 0

Traditional principles of urban planning are associated with the formation of public spaces and the surrounding volumes. This method is also coded in Paupys revitalization solutions, the streets and arcades stretching towards Vilnius merge into the central square. Next to the town square, a residential quarter consisting of six different volumes has been realized on a trapezoidal plot. The urban idea of the composition reflects the specifics of the context: The volumes of the buildings are shrinking and lowering, creating a gradual transition from the city square to the River. Next to the town square, a residential quarter consisting of six different volumes has been realized on a trapezoidal plot.

Beyond the basic criteria that a commercial-multi residential project must meet, the architecture also has to make a unique statement by inducing a perceived image and emotional value to support the commercial side. The always conflicting aspect of the practicality and the emotional becomes the design driver for this project. The goal then is to soften the cold, solid boxy nature of the condominium building by introducing another layer of building façade that acts like clothing to the building. Fine ‘petal’ facade elements envelop & create a subtle layer of visual hierarchy like floral arrangement. The thin hard steel trellis becomes soft and delicate elements when looking from distance. The angled placement enhances the depth and create subtle shade & shadows.

Paul-Zobel-Strasse Apartments / Heide & Von Beckerath

The residential development is located within a spacious ten-storey housing complex in Berlin-Lichtenberg and delivers densification. The construction of additional flats and a new day-care centre for children provides the opportunity for contemporary development in the neighbourhood near Berlin’s centre and considers both individual and collective housing options. The two eight-storey residential towers react to the urban environment by being slightly offset, and a common podium helps blend them into the surroundings. The careful placement of the buildings creates a three-sided courtyard in the south, connects to an existing footpath in the west, a sequence of spaces in the east, and a sheltered garden for the day-care centre in the north.

Rattan in Concrete Jungle Apartment / Absence from Island

August 28, 2020 Andreas Luco 0

Hong Kong is famous for its cramped living space and its concrete jungle. Our client is no different from any ordinary Hongkongers. He purchased a 40 sqm flat and wished to turn it into a home for his family of three. The design aims to keep the living room large and plain while bringing in natural elements to create a relaxed and calm environment. However, the client is not willing to take care of any living plants and therefore we chose rattan, which is a famous product in nearby Guangdong, as the key material for the living room. They are used on cupboard doors where their porosity and light colour helps soften the cupboard’s existence.
