A one-story house is a luxury for a city like São Paulo, whose real estate pressure almost always leads to building the maximum amount allowed for the lot. With that in mind, this reform project starts from the exploration of this virtue that is given to us at first.

The location of the land within a privileged landscape was the determining factor for the implementation of this project. The construction concept was to land over plateaus and develop over axes of paths which were determined by the project’s program. Divided into specific areas, the architecture scheme consisted of open and plentiful spaces, oriented to the amplest view. Characterized by spacious galleries, the main central axes are bathed with natural light and receives ventilation through the pivoting doors.

“Flat 116B” is the southern tip of a collective housing project, designed in the late 1980s by Adalberto Dias, facing the banks of the Cávado river. Fitted in the heart of Barcelos, a small historical city in northern Portugal, the building is the result of an ingenious combination of volumes – animated by long balconies – and the sloping plan of its roof, which follows the topography to the southern limit of the property, an imposing granite wall.

“Para mí los patios son como espacios exteriores domesticados: en ellos se está en contacto con la naturaleza, se escucha el canto de los pájaros, se huele el campo después de las lluvias y se puede mirar de noche a las estrellas. Pero también son lugares que están protegidos de las corrientes de aire, aislados de ruidos. En sus corredores puedes estar mientras llueve.” (HAGERMAN, Oscar. Oscar Hagerman. Monterrey: Biblioteca de Diseño Quórum, 2006)
