Champion Announced for Future ShanShui City International Urban Design Competition

November 25, 2020 Rene Submissions 0

As an important birthplace and practical realization of the concept “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” Lishui has assumed the responsibility of exploring the construction of contemporary ShanShui cities. With this background in mind, we hope to build upon Lishui’s status as a “traditional Chinese ShanShui city” to organically combine the spirit of Chinese ShanShui together with contemporary waterfront urban development concepts. The goal is to methodically construct a ShanShui city spatial framework in order to set a model image for this city typology, to create a new ShanShui city lifestyle, and to explore contemporary, sustainable urban planning strategies.

Call for Entries: Designing for Adaptability With Modular Wood Construction

October 26, 2020 Rene Submissions 0

Buildings are static. They serve the purpose they have been designed for. But when cities grow and the needs of the community change, this becomes a problem. Modular construction with engineered wood products like Kerto LVL are the solution, because they enable adaptable, sustainable and cost competitive designs. It is time to provide solutions to the changing needs of our cities. Time to create an urban adaptation.

The Urban Adaptation Competition challenges architects and students from around the world to find a way to create multi-purpose buildings that can adapt to the changing needs of urban communities. During the life cycle of a building, requirements can change dramatically due to changes in demographics, culture or politics. Over time, a community might need less office space and more kindergartens instead, or vice versa.

Quebec, Canada: the Heart of Mass Timber Construction

October 19, 2020 Rene Submissions 0

Modern timber construction is nothing short of breathtaking. The wooden arches and unique curves delight even the most creative architects. The scale and perception of a wooden building makes it blend in with the decor while still remaining noticeable. The inspiration and the possibility of achieving this type of construction is now trending upward, but who has the knowledge and expertise for these projects? The province of Quebec does, a world leader in mass timber construction.

For the past several years, there’s been increasing talk of a renaissance in timber construction and engineered wood. Quebec has risen to the occasion by specializing in the manufacturing of glulam beams (Glue Laminated Timber) and CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber). Wood structures as a whole have come a long way in the eyes of architects and engineers, according to the US Representative for Wood Construction at QWEB, Eli Gould.
