January 24, 2024 July Shao 0

The Hainan Energy Trading Building stands proudly in Jiangdong New District, an emerging industrial, financial, and residential development on the outskirts of Haikou, capital of China’s Hainan province. The Yankuang Group, owner and occupier of the building, specializes in mining production and sales, high-end coal processing, and modern logistics, and the early entry of the firm’s headquarters in Jiangdong New District paves the way for other leading business to follow suit. The building is a floating box above a landscaped ground floor, and an impressive central courtyard greets visitors as they enter the atrium. The rigid lines of the exterior contrast with the sky gardens positioned at regular intervals—a blend of rigidity and softness that creates a harmonious whole, mirroring the fledgling district’s aim of combining existing site conditions with cutting-edge technology.

Hangzhou Zhongtai Middle School / LZGC Quantum City Design Firm + Zhejiang Jianyuan Architectural Design and Urban Planning Institute

“The purpose of education is to awaken, not to shape”, and the campus and the natural environment should not exist in isolation, so we try to break away from the traditional perception of campus space and try to integrate the valley, sunshine and the new campus, so that young people can unleash their curiosity and exploratory nature and spend their middle school years in an ecologically pleasant campus. Hangzhou Zhongtai Middle School was founded in 2001, and with the continuous influx of urban population, the student population of Zhongtai Middle School has been expanding. In order to create an ecological and free campus environment, the school decided to relocate to a new campus in Yuhang Zhongtai Street. After sorting out the surrounding natural and urban environment elements, we came up with the “study mall” architectural design concept, which abandons the traditional inward-looking campus environment that focuses on coursework and tends to face the city, nature and education with an inclusive attitude, creating a “multi-dynamic line, courtyard-style, and shared campus”.

Twisting Tower and Spiral Station are two structures of the Shanghai Lingang Ecological Restoration Project, located 10 kilometers apart along the coastline. They demonstrate the possibility of infrastructure as a landmark, that not only serves for ecological purposes but also attracts public attention to environmental issues through the visual expression of technical elements. From an architectural perspective, they also attempt to explore economic and intriguing solutions by taking minimal formal manipulation.

The Shenzhen Reef Library is situated in Jiaochangwei, the only village along the Dapeng Peninsula’s coastline in Shenzhen. The aggressive expansion of the tourism industry has caused this once tranquil and peaceful seaside village overcrowded and noisy. The project is affixed to the edge of a busy old street, and except for the relatively open view from the street, the rest of the three sides are adjacent to the neighboring houses. The initial design purpose was to create a diverse and complex public space within a tightly enclosed site.

Wooden Pavilion by the River- FEI PATISSERIE / NEME Studio Architects

November 26, 2023 July Shao 0

The project is located in a granary built by Shunde County in the 1980s. Next to the 70m wide river is the Shunde Lunjiao Dachong, which has been the venue for dragon boat races, and dragon boat crews can often be seen shuttling through the river. The design site is a long glass box (20x6m in length and width) that was added after the renovation. Although it is located at the entrance of the building, the external facade is covered by plants, and the interior is dim, while the internal staircase leading to the first floor (for other tenants) takes up 2/3 of the space, resulting in the interior being only 3m wide at the narrowest point, and at the same time, at a floor height of 4.2m, the space at the bottom of the staircase creates a sense of oppression and is difficult to use. Our aim was to provide a comfortable and complete service space while at the same time combining the characteristics of the site with a sense of being here and now for the FEI, clients, and passers-by.

FUTURE CITY Exhibition Center / Various Associates

November 17, 2023 July Shao 0

The Golden Business Center, a hallmark of “Golden Luohu”, is one of Shenzhen’s earliest urban landmarks completed not long after the city opened up. Constructed in 2003, this building embodies the architectural style prevalent during that period, notably recognized by citizens for its golden hue. To harmoniously integrate the new exhibition center with the existing structure, it becomes crucial to establish an appropriate design scale for the exhibition space’s facade while preserving the style of the original building. To achieve this delicate balance, Various Associates ingeniously incorporated hollowed-out patterns inspired by the city fabric with a golden facade, to echo the original architectural features and establish a connection between the original structure and the new space.

Jinqiao Caojiagou Riverfront Renewal Design / VIASCAPE design

November 9, 2023 July Shao 0

Caojiagou is a tributary of the Huangpu River, which is excluded from the key channel system of Shanghai. In contrast to the renowned Huangpu River or Suzhou Creek, the Caojiagou riverfront appeared to be enclosed, poorly maintained, desolated and lacked interaction with local inhabitants and urban functionalities before renewal. So how to transform the small channel side space from the back side of the urban landscape to the front side of public daily life is the key point of the renewal design.
