This November, Wutopia Lab completes the Satori Harbor, a culturally symbolic library situated in VIPshop’s new headquarters. In Master Zhuangzi, the word Satori (Zhaoche) describes a state of transcendental being in the practice of Taoism, as the morning light shining across the entire earth.
The Concept of Garden Tour
Mother Chang’s Handmade Bakery is a bakery and beverage store with unique local characteristics, that adheres to the concept of handmade bakery. Based on the proprietor’s business philosophy, we put forward the concept of “slow”. We expected it to not only provide food, but even more so a space where visitors can switch to another state right after passing through the front door from the noisy block. So we made an attempt to design this space into a dynamic “Garden Tour” layout, to unwind those who enter, enabling them to perceive and discover the beauty of the space on each footstep. Moreover, that kind of “slow” experience also resonates with the owner’s operation philosophy of purely handmade bakery.

Continuation of identity and cultural vitality
During the 10 years from 2000 to 2010, an average of 250 villages disappeared every day in China, and the traditional rural society was irreversibly declining, and its economic structure, ethnic structure, cultural heritage, and value system were also gradually disintegrating. Sanxi Village in Zhongshan bypassed the process of historical city development and entered the new era in its true state. It is a village that has been completely preserved.
Background
This is a low-cost reconstruction and expansion project of the old campus. Due to the shortage of land, the school needs to build a new junior high school building on the original campus playground to meet the 1,500-degree gaps. The new school building will inevitably bring huge pressure to the original campus environment. There are not enough outdoor activity spaces for teachers and students in the school, and the average outdoor activity space per student is less than 5 square meters.
In cities or villages, regardless of where we live, mortality is the destiny shared by us all. When its inevitability is a given, how do we handle death? Aside from the ancient traditions and rituals, what are our alternative options in terms of commemorating and perceiving death – whether it is the passing of our beloved ones, or the end of our own journey of life? Bearing these queries in mind, we have started the design of the Memorial Hall at Longshan Cemetery and continued to seek for the answers throughout.
The Shuangliu cement plant where the case is located in Zhuantang Town, Xihu District in Hangzhou. In the 1970s, it was the most important building materials Industrial Zone in the suburbs of Hangzhou. Machinery roared and flourished for a time, until it was closed down in 1999. The factory is abandoned, while the factory buildings stand in the flood of the times, and space survives as the witness and recorder of time. Now another 20 years later, the Shuangliu cement plant has been transformed into a cultural and creative artistic Park, and the production activities are renewed in a new way.
Baoding is located on the edge of the Xiong’an New District, where is becoming a new central area for economic and industrial development in North China. However, the reality contradicting the government’s ambition is that the construction of new industrial parks means that the urbanization of suburban land needs to retain and attract more talents and enterprises. Especially in the initial stage of all emerging industrial parks, it is very difficult to attract investment and promote products to the market.

Dali Village is a 600-year-old Dong village in Guizhou that has largely kept its traditional culture intact. The old wooden buildings, rivers and wells, and terraced rice fields all reflect the harmony of a much older way of life. The Well House is a new boutique hotel that aims to situate itself contextually in the simple and austere lifestyle of the village. The challenge was to find ways to update the traditional methods of building with contemporary amenities and evolved design without losing the integrity that makes Dali what it is.
