Disappeared memory
The hutong in Beijing is not only a lifestyle but also the memory of many people’s childhood. With the process of modernization and urbanization, many people have moved out of the hutong, but the feelings of hutong life remain in one’s memory forever. Time has left the mark on buildings, old houses, rotten pillars, and overgrown yards. Hutong’s lifestyle has been “passively” disappeared in the process of urban development. This kind of passivity leads to the disorder of people’s memory, as if childhood memories are still yesterday, but today they are already living in modern buildings, and the estrangement between people and buildings is increasing. How to reappear this passive concealment, return history and beautiful memories, and combine the updated architecture with the natural environment to produce a dialogue between history and the present? it is a problem that we have been trying to explore at the beginning of the renovation of this hutong house.

The yard is a childhood memory, which is real and warm. I remembered I came to Beijing for searching a job ten years ago. In Beijing, the courtyard house (Siheyuan) in hutong can especially impress me. A greeting between the neighbors, ‘have you eaten?’, which makes you feel kind and warm, and the smell from food in the air will makes you familiar. Yes, this is the memory of childhood, a simple communication between people.

The Second Kindergarten of Guangxi Government is located in an alley between Minzhu Road and Jianzheng Road in Nanning. It is surrounded by residential buildings and a primary school. The base before the kindergarten established was composed of old buildings, which could not meet the requirements of the scale and durability for a developing school. After detailed research, the project adopted the method of overall demolition and reconstructing on the original site.

Intent. The construction conditions of the building are very clear. The building height shall not be more than 12 meters and the land area shall not be over 140 square meters. It could be seen that 140 square meters ≈12 meters by 12 meters and the height is also 12 meters. Thus, in the geometric composition of the design, it could be directly associated with a 12x12x12 equilateral cube.

HAN House / Dake Architectural Design

July 27, 2020 罗靖琳 - Jinglin Luo 0

Han House is located in a private house in Shunyi, Beijing. The original site is a simple pavilion, pavilion with a pool koi. This area was originally an outdoor tea house for the owner to entertain friends. Since the architectural space could not meet the needs of better experience, it was transformed into an independent tea house. The narrative content of the space remains unchanged and the narrative logic of the space is changed by the new building, which can neither cover up the characteristics of the original site nor change the harmony of the original site. One of the challenges of the project was to build on the original so that it could continue to be integrated with the original building.
