A villa on a hill with a warm white theme.
Using the white and warm texture of wood as the main character, we created a gentle yet light space in the green.
The hot spring bath is built so that it can be buried in the garden as a separate area.

Badri Residence / Cadence Architects

May 13, 2020 Hana Abdel 0

The Badri residence is a house designed on a typical tight knit urban plot measuring 2400sft. The client requirement was further distinguished into two kinds of spaces. Spaces that needed to be personal and intimate verses spaces that needed to be congregational in nature which encouraged interaction among family and friends. The building’s exterior and interiors was conceptualized as an assemblage of a series of episodes that seek ‘delight’ through architectural effects.

Christ Church Somerset West / Noero Architects

The existing church needed to double in size to accommodate a growing congregation – the church could not be easily extended so it was decided to build a new church and to re-use the original church as a space for children and performance. The minister, Gavin Millard, was an architect who was educated at Wits University in the 1980’s before entering the ministry. He was a great client as he understood our intentions and processes – not only was he a great facilitator but also added immeasurably to the process through wise counsel.

House With 5 Retaining Walls / Kiyoaki Takeda Architects

May 11, 2020 Hana Abdel 0

A new build house for a family of young couples and four children was requested at a site located in residential Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. Most of the neighboring houses were built on top of leveled land formed by enormous concrete walls to accommodate the hilly terrain. However, at this specified site, no preparation for construction had been carried out. Therefore, the earth itself with a rough slope – a height difference of 3.5m – was available. Several small areas were dug out to make the most of the terrain’s nature. Height differences in the ground level emerged by these digs, and various retaining walls to suit each level were designed. Then, “five small retaining walls” that merge nature and artefact appeared on site.

IROHA Village Factory / Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP

This is a factory of Fujiiya, a long-established maker of the famous momiji manju (maple leaf-shaped Japanese confections) of Hiroshima. We were consulted for the overall plan after designing their store in Miyajima. The site is in an industrial area developed on a reclaimed land—an artificial environment that lacked human scale. The location was dull and could be considered a calamity of the land-use zoning system. We thus proposed a place that would function not just as a factory, but to integrate production with research and processing with consumption. We felt that the concept would tie into the spirit of the confection making, which valued nature and the lifestyles of people while maintaining a close relationship with the community.

Casa Kusumahdinata / Aditya Wiratama Architect

The house before renovation was not spatially decent. This was due to the fact that the previous owner had renovated the original state of the house. Originally the house layout was shaped exactly like the other houses within the housing complex. However, because of the unplanned design of the previous owner, the house layout then became spatially awkward with many partitions, little natural lighting and poor air circulation. The house also had a very awkward spatial program that can be seen from how the bathroom was oddly located in the center of the house.

Bó Mon Preschool – The idea of a connecting station – Architecture is not simply a one liner script that subscribed to the moderate range of practical functionality, aesthetic, and sustainability, it must also, in its everyday use, paint up an exciting atmosphere for its inhabitants. The forming of meaningful architecture has been increasingly difficult and challenging than ever with many uncertainties occurred during the long construction process, especially when it comes to a charity project with limited budget and constricted construction condition.
