In the Hyogo Prefecture of Japan, the city of Itami lies roughly 10km from Osaka. Nestled between the Ina River and Muko River, this area has a deep history where discovering old stone tools and ancient pottery fragments is not uncommon. In a traditional Japanese home from the 19th to early 20th century, the entrance foyer (doma in Japanese) was a pad built on the same level as the ground outside with a simple layout including a wood-burning cooker and sink. Like the kitchen of a modern home, the doma is the connection hub where families would naturally gather and allow the home to connect with the neighborhood.

At the foot of the mountain, we designed a cluster of homes for a family, resembling a settlement. The terrain of the village gently slopes upward from west to east, with the site located on the higher eastern side, offering expansive views that overlook the entire community and are surrounded by mountain scenery.

Salient House / Ayutt and Associates design

August 23, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

Salient, commissioned by a gas distributor, is a striking family home designed to stand out as a landmark in a local seaside market. From the outset, the brief was clear: the house needed to make a statement and serve as a reference point for directions within the area. Situated within an old block dominated by timber shophouses and aged structures with tin roofs, safety was a primary concern due to the close quarters and the potential hazards of gas canisters near the timber. The design addresses this by incorporating a two-meter setback and extended eaves around the house, providing firefighters with better access to the densely built surroundings.

We Should Be So Lucky House / Multiplicity

August 22, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

This little house, originally designed by architect David Luck, is a well-recognized, iconic part of its urban streetscape. However, despite being less than 10 years old, the exterior required considerable remediation for it to shine into the future, and the interior to be reworked to eradicate builder faults and fulfill our client/s needs. Our philosophy when either renovating or adapting architecture for reuse is to re-purpose what we can. We are respectful of what is good and analytical of what can be made of what is there, intervening decisively and of our time as/where needed.

Two Villas On Ishigaki Island / 07BEACH

August 22, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

The two vacation rental villas stand on a hill on Ishigaki island, overlooking the sea, located in the center of the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa. It was designed from the initial stage to have typical features of architecture in Yaeyama islands as an accommodation facility for tourists, and the outline of the island-style was created by referencing a form of traditional houses with a wooden structure with high openness, a red-tiled roof, stone wall and Fukugi trees surrounding the site.
