Urban Playground / McCloy + Muchemwa

Neither a sculpture nor a traditional playground, this project brings an element of unexpected play into the city, inviting people to interact with one another and their surroundings in new ways and shifting perceptions of public space within the City of London. By looking at design in the City of London from an unusual perspective – that of a child’s – we see the opportunity for bringing in a more playful or even contemplative atmosphere to the spaces in the heart of the business area which can engage families, visitor,s and city-workers alike.

DOM LAS (‘Forest House’ in Polish) is a project born from a specific situation. 25 years ago, the client bought an empty field near his hometown with the vision to create something for the future. Through care and attention, the 7 hectares have been tended to, trees planted, and grasslands shaped. The careful process of silviculture with selective weeding and thinning of young pine and birch tree saplings has turned this disused field into an attractive and varied landscape, reflecting the native flora of the region.

The Arceaux district in Montpellier is highly representative of the quality of life that reigns in the suburbs close to the historic city center. Its market, its shops, its cafes, its architectural heritage and its schools make it an ideal space for the development of children. The only downside: it is an unclear public space that poorly delimits motorized travel from soft mobility with, in its center, a gigantic open-air car park.

Verwaltungsgebäude Brugg Kabelwerke – Office Building / Tschudin Urech Bolt Architekten

July 17, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

The reason for the Fifties high-rise refurbishment of the building, which was erected in 1956/57, was the high level of asbestos contamination and its poor energy balance. The office building had been valuable before, reports Marco Tschudin of Tschudin Urech Bolt Architekten, but with a sweltering 34 degrees in summer, it was unusable. Many post-war buildings cause similar problems and are replaced under buzzwords like densification, efficiency, or economy. But the administration building was lucky. It still looks – or looks again – almost as it did when it was built. It owes this to its municipal protection status, the sensitivity of the planners, and the willingness of BRUGG Immobilien AG as the building owner to put a little more money in its hand.

Tsubo Niwa House / Incidental Architecture

July 16, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Incidental Architecture exists to support the delivery of great buildings. We love beautiful buildings and elegant details, but the core belief of the practice is that buildings are at their greatest when they serve the lives of the people and communities that inhabit them; while the task of architecture is to design things, things should be incidental to life. In this way, the intention for Tsubo Niwa was to create a building that is durable, flexible, and will be caring and cared for in equal measure.
