The first building of the former Telegraaf complex in Amsterdam Sloterdijk was completed last week: DW02 Lighthouse. It is the completion of the first phase of the redevelopment of the District West office area, which will take place in the coming years. Benthem Crouwel Architects created the master plan for the large-scale transformation of this highly accessible area, located near the highway and just a stone’s throw from the station. As the initial phase, the existing high-rise of DW02 Lighthouse received a substantial upgrade to high-quality office space of 15,700 m². The building was reoriented towards the centrally located square with a four-story expansion featuring an impressive entrance. Unique to the project is the fully wooden structure. The realization of this first project provides a new impulse for this dynamic area, which will continue to develop in the coming years. Daniel Jongtien (architect and partner Benthem Crouwel Architects): “We designed DW02 Lighthouse as the first step in the development of District West. Created for the new way of working: maximum daylight, open office floors, and tangibly sustainable with a distinctive wooden structure.”

Moos De Hill House / AUM Pierre Minassian

Moos De Hill is composed of two simple volumes placed one on top of the other. The triangular shape of the house opens onto the landscape of Lyon. The effect produced by the construction is stunning due to the contrast between its massive shapes and oversized cantilever. The entire building rests on a 23-ton kars rock that has been modeled over time. The rock supports the first floor and is the starting point of the huge 18 meter-cantilver which seems to challenge the laws of physics.

Eco Park Durres / Casanova + Hernandez Architects

Eco Park Durres is a large public park built on a former landfill that was a serious environmental problem for the city. The design is inspired by a famous local Roman mosaic, “The Beauty of Durres”, which serves as a metaphor for the transformation of a polluted site with negative connotations into a public space for recreation and environmental education. The site has been used for years as an open landfill where solid waste has been stocked without any protection. As a result, a serious environmental problem was created. Land pollution was produced by the leachate of solid waste in the soil. Air pollution was produced by the frequent fires provoked by people who burned illegally plastics and organic waste to extract the steel. Water pollution was produced by the spreading of waste in the water channels and food pollution was created because of the practice of feeding animals with the organic materials of the waste.
