Located on a family property, the hillside site provides multiple civil engineering challenges with a very modest budget. The brief was quite typical suggesting three bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, kitchen/dining/living, support spaces, a two plus car garage and a studio. The client, a self-taught artist, and furniture maker, personally furnish and installed the cabinetry and hardwood floor.

As an initial idea we try to achieve a single image, and try to manifest the concept of the free plant. Free Floor with large glass windows, which hold a wooden box, suspended on two large concrete lines. The ground floor contains the collective and public program of the house, living room, bathroom, laundry room, kitchen. The kitchen is housed in a small wooden box, which hides the structure of the house inside.

“Tres Esencias” is an intervention in the public space by Albor Arquitectos for the collective project “Mar Adentro”, an exhibition curated by the Contemporary Art Center Wilfredo Lam for the XIII Biennial of Havana whose main thematic axis was “The construction of the possible”. “Mar Adentro” participates within the official projects of the Biennial that, for the first time, expands outside the capital and coincidentally was located in the city of Cienfuegos in the celebrations for its bicentennial. The proposal of the curatorial team demanded as a first step to define an area of intervention and, as a result of an academic exercise carried out by our team*, the maritime front of the historic center was selected.

Metro at Western Housing / the architects collective

February 3, 2020 Daniel Tapia 0

Located in close proximity to the MTA Exposition Line Expo / Western station, the project is situated along a bustling commercial corridor of neighborhood-serving mom-and-pop shops on Western Blvd. The project illustrates a diagrammatic approach to design, starting with the essential building blocks of the program, which are then shaped by the external constraints that act upon it. The project provides 16 two- and three-bedroom units for families and 16 one-bedroom units for homeless veterans.

Domo Riñihue House / Domo Habitare + Piffardi Aravena Arquitectos

We were facing a great challenge given the majesty and vastness of this remote landscape. We were in the first need to generate a degree of order to face the project, which is why we decided to make a contrast to this immeasurable nature, proposing a location that conquers both the longitudinal and the transverse, giving an order to the program.

JUNG BLDG. Dance Gallery / LEE KEUN SIK ARCHITECTS

February 3, 2020 Daniel Tapia 0

Seongsu-dong, a neighborhood of new vitality that has brought new small shops to the existing urban fabric, is creating a self-sustaining cultural system. When I began the project, I had one question: ‘How does JUNG BLDG. adapt to such an environment?’ The client of the building, who runs a gallery and a boutique, often paints portraits of her ballerina daughter on canvas. She wanted architecture to be a container for family life, just as a painting captures the dynamism of human figures. Another requirement was that red brick would not be used in the new building. The client asked that the JUNG BLDG. would be distinct from the surrounding buildings, and that when one walks along from the main street to the alley the pathway would be connected to the site. The area, including the site of JUNG BLDG., north of the Seoul Forest, is now known as ‘Red Brick Village’ that partially supports construction costs. Nevertheless, the client preferred the use of concrete as opposed to red brick.

House in the Mountains / Kropka Studio

February 2, 2020 Daniel Tapia 0

House in the mountains is the modest, rural home for a 5-person family. It is situated next to Bielsko-Biała, on a longish, sloping site, in Beskid Śląski mountains. It is set in green, hilly scenery with a great view over the mountainous landscape and the nearby valley. The two-story building was integrated into the slope so that only the upper black volume was visible from the driveway. It is crowned with a traditional pitched roof covered with standing seam metal cladding.

Torta da Vila Restaurant / PHENOMENA arquitetura

February 2, 2020 Daniel Tapia 0

The project for a family restaurant, expanding to a new site started from the necessity of developing a new identity both visual and spatial, that could be easily replicated and recognizable. From the existing logo, we extracted only the essential. The colors, green and gray, and the pie symbol became the foundation of a new visual, spatial and brand identity.
