Project Profile – The Jiuzhai Valley National Park Visitor Center project is located at the entrance of the Jiuzhai Valley. Covering around 30,000 m2 and a site area of 89,960 m², the project includes the construction of a visitor center and an international communication center, renovation of the Heye Hotel, garden landscaping, embankment reinforcement along the Baishui River and the Feicui River, and construction of overpasses and ramps, etc. As the park’s signature construction and gateway, it will provide access to transportation and support services to up to 41,000 tourists every day after completion. The Jiuzhai Valley National Park Administration Bureau has contracted the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University Co., LTD., SCEGC No.9 Construction Engineering Group Company LTD., and Sichuan Chuanjian Geotechnical Survey and Design Institute to inspect the site, design and carry out the construction. Mr. Zhuang Weimin, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is in charge of the whole project as the project director. As an important natural heritage and a reserve under the Man and the Biosphere Program, Jiuzhai Valley National Park is host to a diverse and unique natural environment. The damaged and collapsed buildings due to the earthquake have inevitably impacted the park’s ecological environment and will in turn impact local tourism, which has been the pillar industry of Jiuzhai Valley and has been providing material support to the locals. If the buildings are not restored in time, it is bound to affect the local tourism revenue, which is the main source of income for many residents.

A boat brimming with autumn hues,
Ten miles of lake glitter spread wide.
The water deity halts me to behold,

Village Collective Housing / No10-Architects

April 23, 2023 Collin Chen 0

Project origin – Xialapu Village administratively subordinates to Wama Township, Longyang District, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province. The local government has always hoped to build an amalgamated dwelling to improve and solve the housing needs of the lonely elderly in the village. At the same time, it can also rent spare rooms to the families of left-behind children who have a long way to go to school at a low price, so as to make it more convenient for them to go to and from school. These rental fees can be used as daily maintenance and related expenses for amalgamated dwellings. According to the local government, the construction cost of this conglomerate must be low, and it must have the function of 22 living rooms. Xialapu Village responded to the national poverty alleviation and relocation policy in 2018, The scattered people are concentrated here, and a new village is being planned and built. The pattern of the new village has changed from random growth to deliberately planned fan-shaped belt layout, and its architecture has also changed from traditional soil-based houses to modern frame commercial and residential buildings, which is a “standard” modern new rural style. The amalgamated dwelling is located in the east corner of the new village. Seeing that the existing new countryside is surrounded by white walls and tiles, we plan to design an “earthen” house with local materials and continue the local traditional architectural style, so as to preserve the collective memory of the villagers. In addition, we also invited the “One Specialized Village” team as a design cooperation agency to participate in the project.

Customer Experience Center for BMW in Qianhai / ARCHIHOPE

April 22, 2023 Collin Chen 0

At the forefront of the New Special Economic Zone, Qianhai continues the innovative characteristics of Shenzhen for more than 20 years of reform and opening up, carries the unique Marine culture as the core internal driving power, and demonstrates the innovative and inclusive urban spirit. The customer experience center for BMW is located at the junction of Zhenhai Road and Gangcheng Road in Qianhai Cooperation Zone, Shenzhen. Taking into account both the hot and humid environment and conforming to the spirit of the city, the designers reinterpreted the existing building based on the design principle of sustainable development. The relationship between buildings and urban texture is a synthesis of objective existence and subjective judgment. Integrating into the urban texture is not only for the agreement on the style of the facade but also for the integration of internal spirit, the synchronization of lifestyle, and the corresponding to future development. The project is a transformation from an existing old workshop building, and the designers focused on the problems such as architectural facade, noise, shading, ventilation, and daylighting and then rejuvenated the inherent vitality of the overall project.

Xianfeng Community Renovation / Atelier cnS + GZUPDS

April 19, 2023 Collin Chen 0

Located in the center of Shiqiao sub-district of Panyu, Xianfeng Community has been the political and commercial center of Panyu since ancient times and is the epitome of Panyu’s history and culture for over a thousand years. Xianfeng Community has prominent clan settlement culture and rich industrial and commercial trade cultural relics. Since the 21st century, Panyu District has been actively integrated into the development of the main urban area of Guangzhou, forming an economic, educational, and residential agglomeration to the north, which has led to the shift of the urban center of Panyu to the north, and the function and space of the city bridge have gradually declined, becoming a depression for the urban development of Panyu. The old glory is no longer. Under the background of China’s comprehensive promotion of the renovation of old urban communities, this project is launched to preserve the history and culture of the sub-district and reproduce its collective memories, and explore new paths and new methods of micro-renovation that are different from the general practice.

Jianghuai Little Theater / SEU-ARCH

April 17, 2023 Collin Chen 0

The project is located in Xuyi, Jiangsu Province, with Huaihe River in the northwest and the First Mountain in the southeast, adjacent to the First Mountain Historic District. The existing building on the site is a three-way courtyard, currently vacant, with an abandoned water tower in the backyard. Drinking tea and watching Huangmei Opera is very popular in the local area. The openness of the teahouse-style small theater is in line with the simplicity and lightness of Huangmei Opera. In terms of space and function positioning, it is not limited to conventional theater interpretation, but to build a small theater based on the local characteristic Huangmei Opera, combine with the local taste of Yushan Tea, and introduce the traditional cultural exhibition and salon space of intangible cultural heritage to form a “Huangmei Opera+” characteristic cultural museum.

MASONPRINCE Store / TOMO DESIGN

April 17, 2023 Collin Chen 0

At the Dongshankou area in Guangzhou, a rendezvous for stylish young people, an old Western-style house marked with the year “1931” magically resonated with the vintage DNA of MASONPRINCE as if under the influence of an irreversible universal power, and thus became the location of the brand’s first brick-and-mortar store. The vintage sports style of MASONPRINCE starkly contrasts with the futuristic style of THE GOD PRACTICE, which meanwhile creates a special visual sense. How to present such a fashion philosophy in the store space was a key consideration of the project. TOMO Design worked with MASONPRINCE to bring new experiences by creating a narrative with an interrupted timeline, incorporating a design language that “transcends the present”, and building a work scenario of “MP Studio” in the space. With an avant-garde perspective and via a unique medium, the design creates a dialogue between the past and the future. It connects the brand’s classless concept with space, brings out unbounded dynamics, and showcases a multi-dimensional time-space realm of the MASONPRINCE universe. Blurring the boundaries of time, it is related to the past, the plausible realm of the future. 1931 on the reversed timeline represents the urban location where the MP store sits, while 2023 on the forward timeline indicates a contrast of the same urban location at a different time point. The design presents the urban interface of the same place at both time points.

Tower Pavilion in Paddy Fields / Jumping House Lab

April 16, 2023 Collin Chen 0

Amid The Paddies: To Encounter, To Gather. The site is amid paddy fields. In 2019, there held a land art festival where artworks were scattered throughout the venue to attract visitors; the art pieces were far apart, and there was no place to stay and take a break in the paddy fields. Therefore, the client hoped to utilize an existing platform amid the fields to build a 7-day pop-up bubble tea shop during the National Day holiday, which could also be a permanent pavilion for local villagers. We hoped to create a pavilion where people could rest, enjoy the cool and enjoy the view –  a place for people to encounter new friends and meet up with old.
