December 12, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Background – Since the exhibition of “Long Life Design: Thinking and Practicing” has been held in the OCT Art & Design Gallery in Shenzhen (exhibition space designed by Studio 10) and Pearl Art Museum in Shanghai (exhibition space designed by Kooo Architects), curator Mr. Zuo Jing has been carrying out practices and research on sustainable design, hoping to present an exhibition with the concept of “Zero Waste”. Our team has also been exploring sustainability in design practices. It was in such a context that our cooperation was made possible. This time, we designed the setting for the “Back to the Future: Breaking the Time Barrier” exhibition co-curated by Zuo Jing by simply using cardboard.

Bloom Liutan Market / MINAX Architects

December 11, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Chinese cities are experiencing unprecedented changes. After about 40 years rapid construction, what follows is the renewal and reconstruction of those prompt construction products. On the one hand, it is to make up for the quality defects caused by speed, and on the other hand, it is to face the dynamic adjustment of rapidly changed daily life. Rapid construction has met people’s basic functional needs, while the current adjustment bears meanings of both function and spirit. Public buildings take a substantial leading role. Relying on upgrading functions and forms, they reconstruct the critical nodes of the city and then bring new changes in a larger area and boost the quality of urban space. The relocation of the Liutan Agricultural Trade Market is a typical improvement experiment, a crucial-livelihood guarantee and a critical step to upgrade and adjust the space quality of the whole Liutan area.

Shanghai Fushan Tangcheng Foreign Language Primary School (Peide Campus) / Huajian Group Shanghai Architectural Design & Research Institute

December 10, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Most of our designers are parents of school-age children. From the beginning of the design, we have regarded the design of this school as a precious opportunity. In the design, we focus more on children’s psychological feelings, and pay attention to children’s experiences, so as to create a more free and natural space for children. Shanghai Fushan Tangcheng Foreign Language Primary School is located at the intersection of Yupan North Road and Peide Road in Pudong New Area. The scale of the project is 40 classes of primary schools, with four floors above the ground and one floor underground. The total building area is 23,000 ㎡. The design arranged the teaching and auxiliary space and surrounded the food transportation building, teaching building, and office building into a huge shared space, forming a semi-opened campus.

Karst landform is distributed in places like Guangxi, Guizhou and Chongqing. Guangxi is the place with the most widely distributed karst topography. KARST, refers to the geological process that water acts on soluble rocks mainly with chemical dissolution, supplemented by mechanical actions such as water erosion, subsurface erosion and collapse. Guilin landscape is a typical manifestation of karst terrain. Geographical landscapes like karst caves and sinkholes are formed by erosion. Dashiwei sinkholes in Leye County are the largest sinkhole group in the world, which is acclaimed as the “World’s Sinkhole Museum”. The Yunhaitianzhou project is designed to experience such large-scale geographical wonders. The typical cases of viewing the large-scale geographical landscape of the canyon are as follows: The viewing platform of the Grand Canyon in Colorado, Arizona, the United States, and the suspended doughnut shape combines the soaring feeling of buildings with the tourism dynamic lines. Also, the buildings of the Shanxi Hanging Temple are integrated with the cliff wall, which is the representation of the Chinese landscape painting. The link between the cliff wall of Dashiwei sinkholes and the top of the mountain is covered with plants. So, tourists have to approach or exceed the cliff wall to experience the soaring feeling of the sinkholes. If the doughnut shape is adopted, huge support is needed at the rear to balance the front weight.

Dongcai Industrial Park is a typical urban factory area in Shenzhen, the feature of this type is simple line distribution, high efficiency, homogeneity, extensive and monotonous. With the expansion of the urban circle and the transfer of the urban industry to the suburbs or other cities, the property owners and industry types in this area have become s decentralized and complex in constant renewal. The SMOORE headquarters is located in this area, which has been renewed over the past few years to gradually form the enclosed main campus. The Building 7#8#, which was renewed and designed by Atelier Diagonal is located outside of the main area and separated by the urban building.

Renovation of LUXELAKES A4 Art Museum / TEKTONN ARCHITECTS

December 8, 2022 Collin Chen 0

The renovation includes three areas: The Eco-art Museum, the A4 Gallery, and the entrance space of the A4 art Museum. As several areas are located on different levels, and they lack a physical or formal connection to each other, we needed to find logic:  in the fragmented spaces so that the spaces can be fully integrated into the functional areas of the current art exhibition center.

The Bronze Chariots Museum / Atelier Diameter

December 4, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Project Overview. In Lintong, Xi’an, Mount Li stretches hundreds of miles from east to west, immersed in a dark blue aroma, presenting a panoramic view from afar. On the vast plain slowly descending from the foot of the mountain towards its northern slope, stands a gigantic pyramid-shaped mound, solitarily yet proudly. This is the mausoleum belonging to the founder of the centralized imperial system in China that lasted more than 2,000 years – the First Emperor of Qin, Ying Zheng. The ambiance of the mausoleum survived the rapid urban development in modern China, and providentially keeps the landscape structure of mountains and plains as it was before the common era, projecting the ever-lasting charisma of the first emperor who conquered all the states and united China with unbounded confidence. The Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor is one of the first Chinese heritage sites to be inscribed on the World Heritage List (1987). In the new century, the municipal government of Xi’an plans to build a museum dedicated to the conservation, exhibition, and interpretation of two pieces of a national treasure, the “Painted Bronze Chariots, and Horses”, and in the meantime, diverting as many tourists as possible from the world-famous Terracotta Warriors and Horses scenic spot. The two painted bronze chariots and horses were unearthed from the western edge of the mound, about 8 meters deep underground. Compared to the universally renowned grandness of the terracotta army, the bronze chariots are only half the real-life size. But to one’s amazement, the bronze artifacts with hyper-realistic style are assembled from thousands of delicate metal components. Its exquisite and ingenious craftsmanship represents the highest level of human manufacturing techniques from more than two thousand years ago. Between the inner and outer city walls of the mausoleum, a meters-deep huge historically formed (circa Ming Dynasty) gully (Yue Gou) offers the only feasible site for the museum – the gully precludes any possibility of burying cultural relics beneath, which forms an important reason for the National Cultural Heritage Administration to finalize the site selection after much deliberation. It is an extraordinary serendipity that the “Painted Bronze Chariots and Horses” gets to return to the foot of the mausoleum mound and once again accompany the world’s most mysterious emperor forty years after its excavation.

STUDIO 9 / AIM Architecture

December 2, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Studio 9 presents a new concept in furniture retail conceived with the design community at its heart, a space to meet, collaborate and progress. Situated on the ground floor of a former textile factory in a quiet street of JingAn’s district, a rich program of events centered around design and people brings the space to life, creating a new destination on Shanghai’s cultural scene. Taking its cues from the building’s former history and the rawness of its concrete structure, the design underscores the contrast between existing architecture and added elements that refine, organize, and soften. On the outside, a 6m high glass facade wraps the space, flooding it with daylight. On the inside, a grid formation of columns arranges into a U-shaped layout to create a core that connects two atriums in the center of the building, the design goal being to extend the showroom into the public part of the ground floor. Terrazzo flooring spans across both spaces and a moveable glass partition works as an ephemeral boundary that can open fully or partially to allow for a flexible from between the two sides.
