V POINT is a new 30-storey “Ginza” type retail tower with 12,457m2 of commercial space in the heart of Causeway Bay, one of the most vibrant and busiest shopping areas in Hong Kong. The “Ginza” typology originated from Japan where space is limited in the dense urban environment and retail and restaurants spaces have to develop vertically. The tower is located on the vibrant retail Tang Lung Street and has a corner facing Canal Road with a flyover above. Hence the facades of the tower become highly visible from the highway traffic and pedestrians alike. Portions of the building enjoy sea views and mountain views.

Zhao Yang: “I hope that the result of my design is as simple as possible, not concise but simple. This simplicity is a kind of plain and pure. I always don’t like the things that are piled up. I like the sense of power without verbosity. So I often restrain my design. The subtraction in space is not the purpose. The purpose is to convey feelings more directly. It’s just like sketching is the easiest way to express ideas. How can a space have the power of a sketch when it is completed? I want to find that feeling.”

History Museum of Qifeng Village / SUP Atelier

On the mountainside of Guniujiang Resort sits Qifeng Village of Shitai County, Chizhou City, Anhui Province. Our first visit there took us an hour’s drive around the steep and winding mountain roads. At the entrance of the village stood two ginkgo trees, which were said to be over 1,000 years old, with trunks so strong that at least two or three people were needed to encircle one. Flat farmlands with crops as tall as a man stretched in front of the village, and farmhouses with white walls and black tiles lined along the hillside. Qifeng Village seemed to have receded into the bamboo groves in the mountain.

The ancients set considerable store by diet, emphasizing the right food depending on the four seasons. Specific combinations were required to do justice to the season and occasion. “Yuan” means “antique” in Chinese, indicating a life of simplicity, truthfulness and sincerity like that lived by the ancients. “Antique” also implies familiarity, as well as the warmhearted kindness of old friends. So, Yuangu is as unique as its name. Its seasonal changes and desserts bring one face to face with the romance and beauty of the vicissitudes.

The wise finds pleasure in water; the virtuous seeks pleasure in hills. An elegant, peaceful and silent scenario based in the power of water and hill landscaping is what our design trys to pursue in this project. The shape of the roof ridges is a mimic of the mountain-silhouette while the buildings embrace the silent water, which reflects the mountain shades. With tree branches and leaves waving in the wind, trails winding and turning upon the free-flowing water underneath, the sunken courtyards and theme clubhouse all add silence and coziness to the recluse life in the nature.
