Drift House on Little Much Farm / Shonan Purie Trehan + Language.Architecture.Body(LAB)

April 27, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

The villa of ‘The Little Much Farm’ straddles a remote hill side location overlooking the Sahyadri hills of Mulshi and its lake. This is home for a family and their friends to re-engage in the environs of the hills that surround Bombay. The spaces are planned as a series of potential happenings; layered, connected, scalar, with an element of discovery. This is a site with multiple view points and extreme weather conditions. The design strategy of the roof provides shelter from both monsoon rain and the harsh sun; liberating the forms of the enclosures. The enclosures of the house are a composition of angles informed by the various draws of the site and the eccentricities of its owners. Three single slope mild steel roofs slant in distinct directions creating specific conditions; a windy but dry corner, a crack of sky above the entry, a sheltered monsoon walkway.

K House / Ben Walker Architects

The K House is a new two storey dwelling on the south coast of NSW. The project forms an east – west “bar” that allows all interior living spaces to have northern aspect and sun access. The ground floor living spaces face a continuous outdoor courtyard that focuses on an existing Banksia tree – this tree becomes the visual anchor of the project.

Yew House / Campos Studio + Tom Chung Studio

April 25, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

Yew Street House is a traditional Vancouver house that was renovated to suit aging in place. The project was executed as a collaboration between Vancouver design firm Campos Studio and Toronto based industrial designer Tom Chung. Yew House is situated on a small corner lot in Kitsilano, one Vancouver’s original working class neighbourhoods. Originally built in 1907, the house underwent a patchwork of renovations and in the 1970’s most of its land was sold off to accommodate a neighbouring development. Due to the sale of this land it is now impossible to build a new house on the lot. Therefore, the plan became to upgrade the existing house by gutting it down to the studs, reinsulating and seismically upgrading the shell.

President Avenue / Candalepas Associates

April 24, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

We were asked some eight years ago to look at this site which foreshowed a new street, a new place. Behind the aspiration to create a new character to an entire place, was the process to realise it and yet, this was a site that could gain much from the development of a new character. The site incorporates the busy President Avenue to the north and wonderful views to the Royal National Park to the south. This created a problem since we needed to ensure the living spaces received ample sunlight access to the north but also addressed to this wonderful aspect to the south. We created a plan that situated living spaces to the north and their respective kitchens and dining rooms to the south. This allowed for all the units to achieve ample natural sunlight access but also to have the ability to be cross ventilated right through the living spaces. The amenity provided to these apartments is therefore synonymous with the amenity enjoyed by detached dwellings in the local area.

Bicycle Parking Main Station Karlsruhe / TAFKAL

Winds of change – turning a parking garage into a biking garage. Re-use of a carparking garage at the main station of Karlsruhe, Germany, into a garage for biking commuters. The Area south of the main station of Karlsruhe has been abandoned for many years now. In the early nineties, Rem Koolhaas had the commission for his first mayor building, the to-be-internationally-renowned ZKM, a museum for digital art and media. But, after years of discussing and arguing, the city of Karlsruhe pulled back from the project and opened the ZKM at another spot – without Rem. For the past 25 years, the area was reserved for cars and busses, adding the needed infrastructure for individuals coming to the main station.

Small Wooden Pavilion / MQ Architecture

This project entitled a surgical demolition of an existing shed and the erection of a small ancillary building. The old structure housed the electrical and communications utilities of a large compound, and the new project had to preserve the location and function of all this equipment, therefore some walls and floor levels are set from the beginning. The program required two different type of users, therefore we decided to split the building in two, allowing for a separate circulation for each group. The upper piece houses the electrical room and the team quarters, while the lower portion holds two individual restrooms for visitors.

Lake House / Solo Arquitetos

This house, located in Alvorada do Sul, in a site right next to the Paranapanema River was an amazing opportunity to explore the relation between built and natural environment. The design seeks to adapt to the geography, the lengthy shape of the site and to appreciate the beautiful view over the wetlands of the river, quite wooded in the section.
