Located in the heart of a sparsely populated urban area in the town of Corbeil-Essonnes, the building, constructed in 1971, is positioned in the center of the plot. This “Pailleron-type” structure – owing to its similarities with the modularconstruction process – is composed of metal posts and beams clad in glazed facadepanels, and an exterior steel assembly supporting fixed horizontal sunshades. The straightforward geometry of a rectangular parallelepiped is determined by theprocess of construction. The regular facades are marked by a horizontal grid signalingthe three levels of the building, and a vertical grid formed by the modules of identicalwindow units. The building consists of a basement housing technical areas and a car park, a groundfloor with a public reception desk in an area of the lobby, and related functions(lunchroom, a caretaker’s apartment), offices and archives, and finally another flooralso containing offices and archives.

November 2, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The DeHue structure, colloquially pronounced as “dề Huế” in the local dialect, is a wooden house that has been repurposed into a contemporary coffee shop while preserving its traditional Hue architecture. The preservation efforts have maintained the original column, beam, and roof systems of the house. Notable modifications include the installation of a bar in the right corner, the addition of an open roof to allow natural light, and the use of stone cladding on the border columns to create a contrast with the traditional house.

Paddy – Coffee Space / ODB Arquitectos

November 2, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

An ambitious commercial project was developed on a narrow plot of land measuring 5.65 metres wide by 34.20 metres long, with an east-west orientation, located in a central but neglected urban area. The challenge included the need to create a building without architectural barriers, but with the risk of flooding in the street during the intense rains characteristic of the coastal climate. The building was required to be economical in its construction, use and maintenance, while maintaining high standards of habitability in terms of thermal comfort, luminosity and acoustic insulation. These fundamental conditions guided the conception of the project.

October 31, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

Tucked between two classic residential buildings, a recently completed infill by ADEPT provides some much-needed breathing space in this small apartment complex. By adding just 15 m² for 6 of the 7 apartments, the infill solves the need for ‘that extra room’ for the families that share the property. At the same time, the private courtyard was transformed with permeable surfaces and a landscape design focused on urban biodiversity and play.

Rosa / Atlas Architects

October 31, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

Rosa is a thoughtful renovation and ground-floor extension of a 1960s rowhouse in Bussum, The Netherlands. Designed by Atlas Architects, the project integrates contemporary architectural elements while respecting the character of the original brown brick structure. A warm pink palette, used consistently throughout the exterior and garden, defines the visual identity of the project and inspires its name, “Rosa.” At the heart of the extension is a large, striking pink concrete masonry block that serves not only as an aesthetic focal point but also as a multifunctional object. The block integrates practical elements such as cabinetry and an outdoor fireplace, creating a seamless blend of form and function. The concrete bricks are arranged in a vertical pattern that further enhances the modern yet cohesive feel, ensuring harmony with the existing building.

Splavarska Lent-Tabor Bridge / Burgos & Garrido arquitectos + Bernabeu Ingenieros

October 29, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

Maribor’s coachmen were the most delighted when in 1912 the Austrians opened the now Stari Most – the ‘Old Bridge’ – over the Drava River, replacing the wooden bridge that had caused an annoying bottleneck on the busy road from Vienna to Trieste. The Stari Most, which links the districts of Lent and Tabor north and south of the river at its highest point, eventually became a symbol of the city, even though it left the banks of the Drava disconnected at the lowest point. The new Splavarska pedestrian bridge now links the two banks again in close proximity to the ‘Old Bridge’. Next to it, the new bridge is silent, underlines the presence of the metal structure of the old bridge in the city and distinguishes itself from it with a different material.

Arborescence Apartments / WY-TO architects

October 29, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

Arborescence is part of our research approach to integrating greenery with well-being. The 35-metre-high vertical garden is designed through an open call for the “IMAGINE ANGERS” competition. The building exemplifies how architecture can be reimagined to connect nature with the urban environment, and from the Maine River to the city centre. Thereby, serving as a distinctive landmark for the horticultural capital. Leveraging our France-Singapore culture, Arborescence distinguishes herself with the abundance of greenery present throughout all levels of the project. The orientation of the building ensures that each living space benefits from generous natural light, cross-ventilation, and unobstructed views for an environment that advocates for well-being.
