Yutang Culture and Sports Center is located in Tianliao Community, Yutang Subdistrict, Guangming District, Shenzhen, at a local center enclosed by a dense urban-village context and surrounding industrial areas. Conceived as a highly integrated civic complex, the project accommodates a wide range of public programs including a sports hall, library, cultural center, art gallery, performance space, community health service center, bus terminal, and retail facilities. With a total floor area of approximately 54,690 square meters—about 29,000 square meters above ground and 25,690 square meters below—the project primarily serves residents of nearby urban villages as well as the adjacent industrial workforce. The surrounding industrial land is currently undergoing renewal, situating the project within an urban context that remains in flux.

The project is located in the serene community of Santa María del Oro, Nayarit, a remote municipality with limited resources and infrastructure, situated next to a lake formed in the crater of a volcano. This fragile ecosystem, born of geological forces, demands exceptional environmental sensitivity, as any pollution threatens the delicate balance of this unique body of water. The site presents significant physical challenges—a steep slope, a narrow street-facing facade, and a limited budget—that require innovative solutions capable of working with these conditions rather than opposing them. The reality of building in an isolated municipality involved engaging with local construction capabilities and community values, generating opportunities for respectful collaboration that enrich local perspectives instead of imposing external design criteria incompatible with regional skills and resources.

An Architecture of Resonance — The new equestrian performance hall is situated within the Cour du Puits, one of the two historic courtyards of the National Stud (Haras National). Rising seventeen meters high, the edifice boldly redefines the site’s skyline. Its lofty silhouette soars above the Napoleonic stables, echoing the vast slate roofs of these secular longères. In recent decades, cities across the world have seen an increase in the demolition of elevated concrete freeways. Taipei, Seoul, Portland, and Boston, for example, have all seen the rise and fall of these infrastructures to give way to parks and new urban regeneration ideas. In other cases, like Montreal in Canada, some people opposed the freeways even before they were built, effectively rerouting viaducts, preserving heritage, and freeing waterfront views. For San Francisco, in the United States, the story of the Embarcadero Freeway is one of those narratives that serves as a case study of the city’s mid-century infrastructural ambition, people’s reaction to the project, and its eventual reversal in favor of urban connectivity.

The local authority wants to build a new cultural and sports facility that will be able to host regional-level sports competitions. The chosen location is next to two existing facilities: the Pierre de Coubertin sports complex and the André Blot cultural centre. Other facilities are close by but disconnected from these: the stadium, tennis courts, bowling green, and BMX track.
