As Canada developed, architectural styles became a means to express its identity as an independent nation. This architectural development, especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries, was influenced by colonial styles from Great Britain and France. While French colonial was more prominent in Quebec, British styles influenced the rest of the country.

UCCA Clay Museum / Kengo Kuma & Associates

We designed an art museum to showcase the ceramic culture in Yixing, known as the “ceramic capital” and renowned for its production of pottery using purple clay. The site was once the center of Yixing’s ceramic culture, with its numerous pottery factories and ateliers. This project aligns with the master plan to redevelop the area and envisions a cultural center for ceramics, incorporating ateliers and workshops while preserving the remnants of decommissioned factories.

Layered House / SMxL Architects

Located at the border between Yeonhui-dong in Seodaemun-gu and Namgajwa-dong, the Layered House sits along a relatively quiet and peaceful main road. The building’s scale was determined by the widening of the road at a dead-end and the setback requirements due to sunlight restrictions from the north.

Unico, as a co-development village project, aims to provide a new living possibility for city inhabitants. The first phase of the construction involves more than 60 vacant courtyards, each covering an area ranging from 200 to 400 square meters. 45 of these courtyards will be used for residential purposes and 10 will be served as hotels, with additional supporting facilities such as village hall, Dragon King Temple (reception), workshops, dining, gymnasiums, public restrooms, Unico office and staff quarters.
