The New Ghibli Park in Japan: Redefining Theme Parks Through Adaptive Reuse and Sustainability

Studio Ghibli and its co-founder Hayao Miyazaki have become household names in the West, thanks to their impressive body of work, which includes over 10 feature films, 2 Oscars, and more than 100 awards worldwide. Films such as “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle” showcase their mastery of world-building, story telling and compelling visuals which have earned them global acclaim. This has created a devoted fan base that previously only had the Studio Ghibli Museum in Tokyo to experience the films in real life. As the studio’s popularity and movie portfolio grew, it became inevitable for them to expand into a larger space. That is why November 2022 marked the beginning of a new phase as the Ghibli Park opened its gates in Nagoya, Japan.

Renovation and Expansion of the Irura Town Hall / BARRU ARKITEKTURA SLP

The Town Hall building is in the village square, opposite the Church. The project aims to rehabilitate and expand the original building, which has a roughly square layout and features a characteristic rural architecture typical of farmhouses, with visible ashlar stone elements. Its shortcomings in terms of accessibility and energy efficiency prompted a comprehensive renovation and a 50% increase in its usable area.

Regional architecture – The construction takes place in Soc Son, a suburban district of Hanoi, where the agricultural land has been tremendously reduced in accordance with local economic growth. Urban area and industrialized zone projects have decreased agricultural soil size and led farmers to gradually lose their farming land. This fact is clearly reflected during harvest seasons when farmers dry their produce right on highways or town roads due to the lack of drying grounds. This seriously endangers traffic flow and drivers’ safety. Lots of accidents have occurred due to farmer’s land transgression.

This residence is designed for a couple and their child. The site is situated in a residential area carved into the mid-slope of a mountain. The eastern side of the site faces a cliff, offering distant views of the mountains and a panoramic vista of the town below. It is also located in a region with a close-knit community. Given the client’s desire to leverage the site’s natural surroundings, the design was focused on creating a building that allows for enjoying the views while fostering positive relationships with the neighbors.

The client, in transition from their rental accommodation, brought forth fundamental needs reflective of a growing family of four. The initial challenge presented by the site was its orientation, with the only sources of light being from the two narrow sides.
