Architect Alberto Campo Baeza and Chronobiology Professor Till Roenneberg Receive the Daylight Award 2024

In Copenhagen, during the 2024 UNESCO International Day of Light, The Daylight Award has announced Spanish architect and professor Alberto Campo Baeza as the laureate for the architecture category and German professor of chronobiology Till Roenneberg for his scientific research regarding the impact of daylight. The two categories create an interdisciplinary bridge between fields, grounding architectural thinking with high-level research. The two winners have been commended for scientific investigations into issues like circadian rhythms and dependencies in the case of Professor Roenneberg, and the poetic qualities obtained through the use of daylight in Alberto Campo Baeza’s architectural works.

Privileged by its location, as it is between the mountains and the sea, on the coast of São Sebastião (SP), besides being a space for rest, it also shares the sensory experience making it for rental.

Baak 54 Apartments / Arons & Gelauff architecten

Combining apartments with a care home in IJburg. It all proved possible on an impossible triangular plot. The project location is a long, triangular plot of land that the client, De Alliantie, was eager to develop. The site is part of the Haveneiland area in IJburg. The urban plan features compact blocks at the center of the island, which become more open and spacious towards the edges by the water. Part of the project location was designated for Marius Meijboom, a living-and-care home for children and adults with complex disabilities.

“Shifting shades” of rammed earth define Thai community building by Suphasidh Architects

Soil from across Thailand was used to create layers of colour and texture in the rammed-earth walls of Chonburi Multi-Purpose Building, designed by local studio Suphasidh Architects. Overlooking the Bay of Bangkok in the seaside town of Sattahip, the 196-square-metre building contains a cafe and four floors of multipurpose community space, alongside an existing hostel.

Zaha Hadid Architects to convert Latvian warehouse into ferry terminal

British studio Zaha Hadid Architects has revealed plans to adaptively reuse a 1960s shipping warehouse in Riga, Latvia, to create the Ropax Ferry Terminal. Situated beside Daugava River, the 20,000-square-metre terminal by Zaha Hadid Architects will double the port’s current capacity with the addition of a fourth floor topped by an oversized, curved roof. The project of conversion of an original factory hall into offices for Monolot Studio was developed in close collaboration with the client, both in design and on inspection days, during which countless new solutions were created. The investors, Honza and David, the founders of Monolot, are good friends of mine, and we have complemented each other in our collaboration, pushing the design and implementation always a little further towards a better solution.
