Nanxiaoying Heating Plant Renovation / Origin Architect

July 10, 2023 Valeria Silva 0

Origin. Against the background of increasingly stringent environmental governance, coal-fired factories in many urban centers in China cannot avoid the fate of declining. The Beijing Nanxiaoying Heating Plant, built in the late 1980s, was shut down ten years ago. The once-hot regional energy center has become a desolate place that is incompatible with surrounding residential areas. The factory area is ruined, and memories have been blurred. Now it is facing a new opportunity, which will be transformed into an open urban block integrating office, commerce, culture, and sports – YueJieJinhui Park. Origin Architect hopes to use this external intervention to reveal the internal characteristics of the site that have been concealed and suppressed, allowing the abandoned heating plant to regain its individuality, dignity, and strength; While injecting new vitality into the future, building a gaze, connection, and journey back to the passing time, where the past and future overlap and the extinguished fire reignited again.

Local House / Zen Architects

Located within Mount Eagle Estate in Eaglemont, Local House is a modern, sustainable home that reinterprets the character of the historically significant suburb and harmonizes with its landscaped surroundings. Marion Mahoney and Walter Burley Griffin planned and designed the picturesque subdivision in 1915, with winding roads and community parklands that follow the curving topography, and dwellings that are secondary to the natural landscape. Proponents of modern architecture, the Griffins designed houses free from stylistic precedent. Consequently, the guidelines for Mount Eagle Estate recommend architects take the same approach today while complying with the heritage, landscape, and vegetation protection overlays.

The project is conceived in dialogue with the forest of “Belle Idee,” which is partially present to the north of the site and has gradually been cleared to make way for agricultural fields and collective housing. The initial gesture was to propose a “Clearing” surrounded by a series of trees. It extends the presence of the forest while enhancing the wildlife and flora of the place. The volume primarily serves as a complement to the vegetation circle with its curved facade, which incorporates a fountain evoking a Nympheum. It provides a new shaded leisure space open to the residents.
