Ninth Coffee Shop / STUDIO FSJ

February 17, 2023 Collin Chen 0

Located on the ground floor of Shanghai Changfeng Joy City, Ninth Coffee occupies one corner of the outdoor atrium of the shopping mall. The all-outdoor climate, the square scale of the hall, and the street neighborhood feel bring the project a special urban atmosphere. The café starts with an“anchor”: Kiosk. Like a small side pavilion in a public square of a city, it opens up in all directions. Its powerful presence catches the eyes of pedestrians coming from any direction – a center for trading and communication.

BPE House / Bali Gedeg Builders

Krtajna’s design is a blend of sustainable living and nature. The house takes inspiration from the natural fall of the land and the surrounding environment, and its sloping block gracefully descends to the river. The river’s rapids offer a calming and inspiring effect, with the sound of water running over the rocks varying depending on the rainfall. The open living space, high ceilings, and breathtaking views create a feeling of being immersed in nature.

Shangfeng Public Library and School Gymnasium / David Hong Architects

February 17, 2023 Hana Abdel 0

The project locates at the fringe of Taichung City. Like most rural areas in Taiwan, it is densely populated with low-rise residential buildings and farmland, however very few areas are reserved for public amenities. It has called for a library for the community and a school gymnasium, right next to an existing primary school. The challenge of this project is more than just simply placing these two buildings and programs in a very difficult site but creating a sense of place through expanding layers of activities, natural conditions, tectonic details, and ambiance. Because the site is very long and narrow, buildings have to be distributed at two ends of the boundary. These two buildings shall face each other and create a communal square in the middle. The square becomes the new focus as well as the new side entry for the school which knitted the community and school even closer. Outdoor terraces, roof gardens, and a ramp projecting out from these two buildings try to extend the periphery of the communal square.
