February 20, 2023 Collin Chen 0

CLOU architects were commissioned by Vanke to design the fourth-floor atrium of the newly opened Future City Mall in Qingdao. Located in Qingdao’s northern district, Vanke Future City is a brand-new shopping and leisure destination devoted to the mingling of aesthetics, creativity, and social experiences, hoping to bring a fresh vitality to Qingdao’s old town and its surroundings. The crux of the design challenge was to create an iconic social space, tempting customers to the upper levels of the mall, and energizing its retail and dining areas. This led to the concept of an immersive jungle garden.

‘Yoga is the practice of calming the constant wave of the mind.’ The verse is found in Chapter 1:2 of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, a book containing yoga teachings. While practicing yoga, we close our eyes and breathe deeply and slowly in and out in repetition. This is a simple, silent practice of concentrating on one’s inner movements. The inner power of reaching complete unity with the universe lies behind the body’s movement to perform yoga. The ability to listen to my inner voice through breathing and moving, the ability to come to terms with who I truly am through a complete understanding of myself, and the ability to accept myself as I am, are all fundamental aspects of yoga.

Dusk House / naav studio

Inspired by the hues of crepuscular light, this private terrace bar located in the plush Banjara Hills is the perfect embodiment of functional yet aesthetic space. The refreshing tropical modern design pulls one right into the warmth of the sunset, capturing the essence of it like no other. The first challenge here is combining the distinctive design elements of the house and terrace – an ingenious resolution is found in the creation of a semi-outdoor transitional space leading to a floating staircase. The intricately woven teak beaded door and the crimson in the antique kumkum (a traditional Indian red turmeric powder) box installation pop against the warm tone of the wood and the oxide finish wall in this space. The achromatic swing hanging over the verdant green rug further offsets the subtle colors, easing us into the color palette of the adjacent rooms.

Sand Beach Club / Taste Space

Back in the past, this area was once the domicile of fishermen in Chaosamran Beach Petchaburi. Right back on the first inspection day of the design team, the only thing that barely left here to be seen is the old ruins of the fishing ship. Though, there were only keelson and some parts of planks and floors that they found. With that founding, one of the design team spontaneously burst out the idea of the craftmanship art of wooden boat building. Since then, the inspiration of the whole design was blended into a local fisherman boat with the attention to send that message through the design of Sand Beach, the place where there is an original story of fishing boat building.
