The project is part of the greater development of a former textile factory in Chemnitz, where the fast-growing start-up company Staffbase with branches all over the world still keeps its main headquarter. The historic village of Broek in Waterland is known for its large wooden houses. These historic houses were built in the 17th century often by captains of the Dutch East Indies company, one of the world’s first multinationals. Originally the houses were painted in various colours but later economic decline made the people use just grey primer to paint and maintain the houses.
Thinking about woodworking in wet areas is one of the key parts of interior design. In the case of bathrooms, besides creating spaces for storing toiletries or towels, woodworking can serve as an element that composes the space by bringing different possibilities of decoration or even hiding pipes.
Our project for the ONF’s new headquarters addresses multiple issues: the urban transformation of one of Maisons-Alfort’s strategic sites, providing the office headquarters with a modern outlook inspired by the 21st-century open space architecture, and the acknowledgment of contemporary ecological challenges through the use of woodwork.
