Basement Extension to a Former Artist Studio / VATRAA

The client, a family of three, started the project as a property developer. Halfway through the design, they loved it so much that they decided to make it their own house. While not forgetting the investment factor (maximising the floor space was a must), we dove deep into understanding their personalities. Exploring their interest in spirituality and meditation, we agreed that the house should become their private sanctuary – protective, calm and serene. As a result, the house became an atmospheric journey, from the secluded basement to the vibrant first floor, orchestrated around dichotomies as dark-light, calm-vibrant, warm-cold or intimate-exposed.

Mika Twin Towers / Alidoost and Partners

Many cities in the world have accommodated twin towers with different functions themselves. Considering the skyline, these twin towers generally have a typical shape, presenting two tall buildings adjacent to each other with some discrepancies in façade design. Moreover, despite the variety in the form and shape of the towers, the common specifications of most of them had been inducing a sense of massive and inhuman scale to a viewer in front of the surrounding urban space. In the Mika Residential Towers Project, the designers try to focus on changing this pattern and creating a new type of twin structure for residential use.

Kalrav Villa / VPA Architects

An abode to humans and birds alike; Kalrav house, which translates to the house of chirping birds, is nested within a thicket of previously existing and newly sapped trees. Facing the east, Kalrav (façade) opens up in the form of a ‘flying bird’. Following the position of the house, the intent is the least possible footprint taken up by the house. The form is shaped with glass as a façade supported by exposed concrete and lime plaster to flaunt the minimal, sleek, and earthy design. One is welcomed by the low heightened entrance pavilion into the house which unfolds two elevated seating rooms – private and formal- encompassed by water bodies, thus forming the ambiance of a floating island.

Three historic 19th-century buildings form the corner of Oliver and Purchase Streets in Boston’s Financial District. Slowly erased over a century of use, there was an opportunity to re-connect the development to its history of place through a new lobby and common space that re-envisioned the underutilized space, forming a stronger connection between the historic buildings and the more contemporary towers, and recall a memory of the original structure.
