Domus Laetitiae House in a Refugee Settlement / Studio Kyriakos Miltiadou

The house is built on the traces of a ruined building in a high-density refugee settlement in Nicosia, Cyprus. It is situated between two existing partition walls on a narrow land (​​189 m²). The Cypriot refugee camps were erected shortly after the summer of the Turkish invasion in 1974, to provide temporary accommodation for the Greek-Cypriot refugees who were forced to leave their homes because of the war. Today, these sites bear the signs of abandonment and decay and are more like urban crevices interrupting the continuity of the city. The restrictive building regulations that are applied in these sites, indicate a complex condition raising questions regarding their readjustment to the contemporary ways of residential living.

On the corner of the ground floor on Ferdinand Bolstraat and Eerste Jan van der Heijdenstraat, owner Kroonenberg Groep has radically redeveloped, merged, and expanded several 19th-century shop premises and a small warehouse. One large retail space was created on the corner of the shopping street over 3 plots. The warehouse on Eerste Jan van der Heijdenstraat was transformed into a smaller retail space. The new stores have a cellar and inviting facades.

The complex of recreational buildings is located in the buffer zone of the Tatra National Park, near the entrance to the Kościelisko Valley. The plot, inclined towards the south, offers a panoramic view of the Tatra Mountains with the Giewont Mountain dominating in the foreground. The location of the investment has become an inspiration for architecture as well as for functional and spatial solutions.
