What Is a Dry Garden? Tips for Implementing One

September 29, 2022 ArchDaily Team 0

Taking care of a plant is not always easy. There are species that must be watered daily, while others can go for a longer period without any contact with water. By looking for the latter, it is possible to design landscaping that considerably reduces maintenance – including the amount of pruning and watering, for example – and water consumption, making it easier for greenery to exist without major headaches: a dry garden.

Background
Located in Nanshangang, Sangzhou Town, Ninghai County, Zhejiang, the project is positioned as a small cultural and tourism building that integrates a tourist center and spaces for displaying and experiencing the local history and culture. The site is far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, with only one country road connecting several villages nearby. And there are local villagers working in fields around the site every now and then. Due to great height discrepancy, the plot features recessed platforms ascending from north to south, with a broad view on the north side. The site faces terraced fields on the east and west sides, and embrace the view of rolling mountains in the distance.

Aireys Inlet is a quiet coastal town located on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia. The site is inland slightly on the edge of the hills in dense bushland overlooking the inlet, lighthouse, and ocean to the south, a valley to the west, the ocean to the east, and bushland to the north. The site has some endangered tree species which were carefully avoided along with other existing trees by sitting the house in an existing clearing occupied by a simple dwelling built after the bushfires in 1983.

A unique design assignment. Four varied religious groups, Hindus, Shia Muslims, Sunni Muslims, Lingayat, share One parcel of Land to perform the last rights and perform rituals for their departed. The greatest challenge was each religion had its own stringent and divergent approaches to the design, in terms of color, expression, visual language, and privacy.  The municipality divided the land into different segments and had common access. It was important to express the design in a universal language to convey the sensitivity of the program while giving each community its sense of identity and personality.
