After my recent interview with Gensler’s Director Harry Ibbs on Leveraging Technological Advancements to Bring Workers Back to Office I decided to cover the topic of a post-covid practice workplace culture from a completely different angle. In search of a more intimate approach, I looked into AL_A, a RIBA 2009 Stirling Prize-winning studio founded by Amanda Levete with directors Ho-Yin Ng, Alice Dietsch and Maximiliano Arrocet. The house stands in one of the settlements of individual houses in Vilnius city. The street and neighboring buildings are under development. Several plots already have houses, but most are still waiting for individual construction with an unpredictable architectural result. Such a forecast for the future resulted in a restrained and laconic character of the house that could easily cope with the various solutions of the neighboring buildings.

Coffee shops have always been popular gathering spaces among coffee lovers, but with the rise of remote working, especially post-pandemic, they have become a hotspot for remote workers and students as well. One of the many reasons why they are such a popular hangout spot, other than the fact that they serve one of the most globally-adored drinks, is because of their well-designed interior spaces that promote comfort, relaxation, and productivity simultaneously. After all, it’s always been said that architects and coffee go hand in hand. In this interior focus, we explore how different design elements shape the user experience of a coffee shop, and look at how architects have employed them through 17 examples.

Qintai Art Museum is located on the lakeside of Moon Lake in Wuhan’s Hanyang District, facing Meizi Hill across the lake to the south. In order to reduce the weight of the architectural mass on the natural surface of the lake, the form of an undulating natural terrain is used in the direction of the lake, while sinking part of the exhibition spaces underground. This both uses the underground space, and also minimizes the massing on the ground. On the side facing the city road, on the other hand, a vertical facade continues to uphold architecture’s urbanity.

The Smithsonian Institution has announced that the glass-clad pyramid restaurant of Washington D.C’s National Air and Space Museum, designed by Gyo Obata, FAIA, co-founder of renowned architecture firm HOK, will be demolished this spring and replaced with a new educational facility titled the Bezos Learning Center. The restaurant is one of two buildings designed by the late architect for the National Mall, originally constructed in 1988 as an additional structure to the National Air and Space Museum, that served as a dining area for the museum’s visitors.

Standing out on top of a hill, the Itatiba House was designed in such a way as to make the most of the existing topography, keeping the building at a high level in order to enjoy the view of the surroundings. The implantation of the house happens in an oblique way in relation to the street, making it skewed on the lot. In addition to guaranteeing the most beautiful views for most of the rooms, we managed to ensure that the project would guarantee a greater distance from the future neighbor with the most important view and that the openings of most of the rooms of the house would be oriented to the North-South face, optimizing the insolation in the winter and at the same time being more protected from the peak sun in the summer.
