Life and forms that blend in with nature. The project site is surrounded by a mountain with large undulations and is rich in nature. The site is lined with impressive trees such as plum trees, sarsaparilla, and maple trees. The owner planned to spend weekends here, and in the future, he would like to move here to run a farm. They wanted to make minor improvements to the existing main house, demolish several shacks along the cliff, and build a new shack (agricultural warehouse).

The site was provided for a multi-storey car park located at the center of the area of support facilities for ancillary functions of a large-scale industrial complex according to the district unit plan. For parking-only buildings, 70% of the total floor area can be used as a parking lot and 30% can be used for purposes other than parking. This kind of architectural type of parking building is relatively modern along with the invention of automobiles. However, this stacked parking structure is usually built on the remaining site at the lowest cost following a general prototype, so it is difficult to give architectural value in general. What potential value can we uncover in this project? It started with the question.

Hende Scheme Kuramae Office / DDAA

April 13, 2022 Hana Abdel 0

This project is to renovate an entire concrete building near Kuramae Station into a showroom and office for IaicoS, which operates Hender Scheme and Polyploid. There are a few simple, specific rules for this space. The first is to use raw-edged materials as they are without significant edge treatment except for deburring. The second is to use the colors of materials as they are as much as possible without color matching. The third is to treat opposites, such as craft/industrial, front/back, artificial/natural, and cheap/luxurious as equally as possible.

Prairie House / Arch.Lab

The house is largely a depiction of a fusion of the client’s lifestyle requirements shaped through the design ideology. The clients were a family consisting of three generations (a couple, their parents, and two children) with a simple brief of wanting to be on the same level so that they would be around the young kids and have spaces to entertain their guests additionally. This meant to have distinct spaces for each generation and yet, integrate them on the same level inside, as well as with the outdoor spaces.  Here, we re-interpret the perception of courtyards, basements, and shelters. The idea of shelter has been translated as a large overhang, trying to complement and extend the shelter of the existing trees on site.

Cuernavaca Guest Bathrooms / Mario Herrera Holgado

April 13, 2022 Valeria Silva 0

The need to build some guest bathrooms and a storage room made us question the traditional models for these spaces. The first part of the project was based on finding the right location within the property, which houses a historic house built more than a hundred years ago, located in the city center of Cuernavaca. At the rear of the house, a large concrete slab suggests the location of a garden. It is right there where the first action arises, raising the concrete slab to be in contact with the earth again, lowering the temperature considerably and beginning the process of bringing the garden back.

The ER house is a renovation and expansion project for the upper floor of an existing house, which previously had only a suite and a small office. The project was based on the creation of two extra suites, a small deposit, and the remodeling of the existing office. With that in mind, the adaptation of the facade respected the original preexisting 2.5 m modulations designed by the architect Karin Engelhardt Rosa in the 90s.
