Within a deep valley, a calm lake, fed by constant rain, develops into a dazzling stream. At Sakleshpur, Karnataka, a site abutting this lake, surrounded by mesmerizing vegetation and fauna, provides an immersive experience in the real world. A calm environment for a vaulting performance, where one might dine and drink in peace.
Shigeru Ban Architects designed a wellness retreat on Japan’s Awaji Island. The project features a bridge-like wooden structure suspended above the lush landscape, providing visitors with a zen experience. The Vierendeel timber girder allows for a 21-metre span and a significant cantilever on one end of the 90-metre long structure. The Zenbo Seinei retreat, which will focus on meditation and healthy food, is currently under construction and is set to open this spring.

The culturally-significant town of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, is an area of rich history and religion, preserving traces of walls, moats, and temples from a past that dates back to the 13th century. Between its lush trees and scenic landscapes sits architectural design studio Sher Maker’s workshop and office, a locally-sourced space that accentuates the process and meaning behind building construction. Their workspace is no different than their portfolio; having an interest in the origins of architectural formations, the context of local materials and technologies, as well as the atmosphere that surrounds the building both physically and atmospherically, the team translated their design approach to create their own working space.
Prosthesis. Caffe del Popolo is one of those experiments that arise in spaces that are often understood as unusable or obsolete in the city. The project was carried out in a triangular void between two blocks of apartments in the Nueva Córdoba neighborhood. A perception of compression by its context triggered the initial exploration for the design of this enclosure, which from the beginning was conceived as an object capable of fitting into the void, as an “urban prosthesis”. The project proposes a way to enter a dense urban environment and to generate action from it towards the city.
‘’Hokuriku Residence’’ series are experiments for discovering the possibilities of architecture through the historical connections of this area. ”Hokuriku’’, in the northwest part of Japan, is located by the sea at a place with heavy rain and snow. In response to them, how to create an outdoor space for rain and snow, coloring suitable for cloudy weather, and handling daylight in winter are important themes.

Experiencing architecture strengthens one’s sense of being in the world, as it engages multiple human senses, and essentially becomes an extended experience of the self. Perceiving architecture with more than mere vision allows a deeper sense of connection with the built space, and good design must strive to provide this experience to the visitor. For this residence, it was key that the planning cleared away any feeling of detachment, within or outside the residence. With a transition of uncontrolled to controlled landscape, a second skin encasing the house and tackling the senses, a variety of architectural strategies help remove any feeling of disconnection felt within the space.
N.THING is a company that operates smart farms. They have built a container system on the outskirts of the city to run their farms. A container farm was brought into a building in the city center to expand the business targeting businesses to individual customers. The company creates a brand called SIKMULSUNG and provides vegetables grown in smart farms to customers. The meaning of SIKMULSUNG is plant + planet, a virtual star between Earth and Mars. The name reflects the system that can be cultivated in space. It was branded with the big dream of a company that builds a farm on Mars.
Located in Kuwait City, Architecture & the Arts studio office is set to be a space that encompasses multiple creative functions for the practice of architecture, interior design, and product design. The space acts as an open platform that amplifies the principle of true ‘open space’. Privacy is defined by the materials of each free-standing partition, allowing the user to explore freely and endlessly. With the inspiration of the classics, the architects’ intentions were to create a harmonious combination of natural materials which include oak wood and Italian travertine to juxtapose the stainless steel surfaces.
