How to Bring Walls to Life With Three-Dimensional Solutions

March 14, 2022 James Wormald 0

Statement interiors leave a lasting impression on both frequent and infrequent users, whether with striking pieces of furniture, oversized lighting, or even a bold feature wall. The very best creations, however, don’t need to beg for attention to be recounted afterward, they let praise come to them with a peacocking presence so extravagant, it’s impossible not to take notice.

Sustainability: The Space Debate

March 14, 2022 Matthew Maganga 0

In the architectural conversations taking place today, sustainability is a key topic of interest. Architecture firms embrace the term as a key part of their design ethos, and architecture schools globally have integrated designing “green” architecture as a core component of their curriculums. This sustainability conversation has also filtered down into more individual actions one can take within their immediate context. Online, for instance, guides abound on how you can make your home more eco-friendly and energy-efficient.

House in Pomar do Cafezal / Coletivo LEVANTE

“Lá da Favelinha” cultural center’s manager, Kdu dos Anjos, prefers to call this house, affectionately, “my shack”. The house was implanted in an angled plot, of approximately 70m², where it was possible to fit two structural modules of 3×3m, on two levels, bordered by a small extension of the house leaning against the border. From afar, there is no difference in the amalgam of apparent ceramic brick constructions of the “Aglomerado da Serra”, the slum where the house is located.

It is a house for a family of four. After my sons left home in the future, I wanted a home for the couple to have a comfortable life. This time, which is the second time to build a house, we decided to plan with a minimum budget and scale.

Beginning with helping our clients assess and select the parcel of land, the design process has been a close collaboration. The site was selected for it’s relative isolation and especially it’s outlook. From this, the Studio was originally conceived as a viewfinder – based on the form of a slide- viewer held up to your eye – focussing the occupants on the view across Great Oyster Bay, to the Freycinet Peninsula. The other guiding idea was that of a solid tent – a structure that provided the shelter required on such an exposed site, while maintaining the immediacy of the surrounding and greater landscape. Due to the size and arrangement of openings, you always feel close to the landscape and the weather.

Sleeping Lab·Arch / Atelier d’More

Project overview. The project is located in Huangmuchang Village, Zhangjiawan Town, Tongzhou District, Beijing. There is no farmland here, but it is more like the back garden of Beijing. With the small houses with a similar appearance, white walls, and red windows, the 600-year history of the Royal New Village can still be felt here. The building is located in an eye-catching position in the northwest of the village. It is a two-story brick-concrete building, originally used as a residential office. Atelier d’More was commissioned to renovate the space, as the sleep Institute’s first B&B project near Beijing Universal Studios. The weather-beaten exterior walls and wind-blown eaves are eager to be refurbished and restored.

Site-specific. A manifestation of duality expressed by the constant superposition of contrasts: instability and balance, contemporary and historical, a wall that limits and a circle that receives, the space, at once, interior and exterior, the open and the closed, signalizes, at the same time, the weight and lightness of our time.
