The Latest Exhibition at Aedes Showcases the Transformation of Stone Quarries into Cultural Infrastructure

Aedes Architecture Forum recently inaugurated the “Jinyun Quarries – The Quarry as Stage” exhibition, which showcases the transformation of abandoned stone quarries in the Zhejiang Province, China, into a platform for cultural and social activities. Beijing architect Xu Tiantian and the team of DnA_Design and Architecture were tasked with developing a new public infrastructure inside nine of the mines in Jinyun County, thus opening up new economic perspectives for the local people. Running until May 5th, the exhibition highlights the extraordinary spatiality of the stone quarries while communicating the complexity of the structures through a series of models, plans and photographs of the interventions.

Ylivieska Church / K2S Architects

The old historical wooden church of Ylivieska tragically burned down in 2016. The citizens of the small town were shocked and devastated. The local parish quickly decided that a new church building was needed to comfort and support the community. K2S Architects was selected to design the new church through an open architecture competition in 2017.

Synagogue Square in Onda / Grupo Aranea + El fabricante de espheras + Cel-Ras Arquitectura

1. Context. The project is urban regeneration and heritage intervention, located in the Historical City Center of Onda, from de Islamic period (s.XI-sXII) declared as a Monument of Significant Cultural Interest with the Monument category in 1967. The square is a void in the medieval city, in a topographic area, close to the archaeological rests of Arabic medieval palaces and the Christian Church. This square was a social meeting space in the past, for agriculture uses or as a playground of a children’s school. But in the last decades was used only as a parking lot, degrading the quality of the space. In 2016, during archeological research, an enclosure of medieval rammed earth walls reinforced with stones and the rests of a stair and pilasters of arches were discovered 5 meters deep in the ground.

House No. 58 / FCHY architect lab

“House No.58” is a renovation project of an old apartment. It is located on the first floor of an alley with intimate scale and complex context in a high-density residential area. There are many small shops, parking lots, and various types of residences in the neighborhood. Organized- chaotic parking arrangements on the street along with neighborhood gatherings, chatting on the street, hanging out the laundry outside of the window, and storing stuff in front of the door and/or house temporarily during daily life. It’s an alley where you can sense living.

Grampians Peaks Trail Cabins / McGregor Coxall

The Grampians Peaks Trail (GPT) Stage 2 offers a world class hiking experience over 160km of pristine Gariwerd wilderness. The trail traverses the lands of three traditional owners being Barengi Gadjin Land Council, Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation and Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and includes three regional council jurisdictions. The project includes 10 sites along the GPT plus the group site of Stony Creek but excludes Stage 1 at Bugiga, undertaken previously by others.

Sky Pool House / Guz Architects

The client for the Sky Pool house originally intended to make alterations and additions to the existing house. However, after designing for some months they realized that the existing house really did not match their new requirements and it was more ideal to just start from scratch. The site sits on an elevated plot at the end of a small cul de sac, and is considered a prime residential area of Singapore.
