From intersectionality and labor to the climate crisis, a designer must work with a range of conditions and contexts that inform the built environment and the process of its creation. Across cultures, policies and climates, architecture is as much functional and aesthetic as it is political, social, economic, and ecological. By addressing the ethics of practice, designers can reimagine the discipline’s impact and who it serves.

The stone marked the starting point. Being on volcanic soil, the mountains are only covered by a light layer of clay that supports the vegetation. The plants are short and seasonal; vibrant greens for five months of rain and dry the rest of the year. The landscape is transformed as well as the architecture. That means that it is built from a thought of transformation of the landscape by obtaining from the land the resources to build habitable spaces.

Grimshaw’s Eden Project in Qingdao Takes Shape with Grand Biome Structure

Grimshaw‘s first permanent Eden Project outside the United Kingdom has reached a construction milestone with the completion of the project’s centerpiece Storm Forest Biome. The single-space biome structure, which is larger than the domes at the Eden Project in Cornwall, encloses a planted space of over 27,000 square meters and uses water as the “life blood of nature, culture, and civilization”.

The overall building volume of the Gustav Heinemann Comprehensive School in Essen was broken down into differentiated section. The stringent structure has resulted in clearly defined outdoor spaces on the school campus. The offset positioning of the individual building sections ensures a scaled integration into the urban context. The offset of the two southern building parts creates a clearly recognisable entrance zone, which, with its forecourt, represents the prelude and identity of the new school grounds.
