On the 27th floor of a 50-storey house, we rented a 90-square meter apartment with 2 bedrooms and converted it into a park. This house is located in a new high-density residential area in Xinglin Bay Xiamen. It’s a one stair-six units building with 300 families in total. If there are 3 people living in an apartment and the occupancy rate is 70%, this house will have nearly 600 residents.

In keeping with the client’s desire for a strictly Vastu compliant house, the placement of the spaces in the house are in synch with the plan of the Vastu Purusha Mandala. Thus the biggest challenge while designing the house was to arrive at a visually appealing structure from a rigid program that dictated the specific locations of various spaces. The design of this residence aims at getting rid of the solemn and stereotyped impression of a traditional Vastu defined home, where the nine grids curb the free flowing creativity of design. Instead it focuses primarily on creating an open and active living atmosphere where the young family can grow into and flourish. This residence is an ideal illustrative of an urban home designed for a family of four.

This is a factory of Fujiiya, a long-established maker of the famous momiji manju (maple leaf-shaped Japanese confections) of Hiroshima. We were consulted for the overall plan after designing their store in Miyajima. The site is in an industrial area developed on a reclaimed land—an artificial environment that lacked human scale. The location was dull and could be considered a calamity of the land-use zoning system. We thus proposed a place that would function not just as a factory, but to integrate production with research and processing with consumption. We felt that the concept would tie into the spirit of the confection making, which valued nature and the lifestyles of people while maintaining a close relationship with the community.
The house before renovation was not spatially decent. This was due to the fact that the previous owner had renovated the original state of the house. Originally the house layout was shaped exactly like the other houses within the housing complex. However, because of the unplanned design of the previous owner, the house layout then became spatially awkward with many partitions, little natural lighting and poor air circulation. The house also had a very awkward spatial program that can be seen from how the bathroom was oddly located in the center of the house.
