In order to understand the origins of the residence’s name, we have to go back to the story of one of its two inhabitants. During his childhood, this man used to live on the family-owned farm in the Centre-du-Québec region. When he grew older, his parents left him a sizable portion at the far end of their land that they could not cultivate. Literally meaning the “far end” Les Abouts remained unoccupied for quite some time. After a couple of years spent abroad, it became obvious to the owner that he should colonize the parcel of land he had inherited. Therefore, he and his partner together decided to have a secondary residence built on Les Abouts. As art collectors and enthusiasts, they decided they wanted wide spaces to showcase their various acquisitions throughout the house.

Continuing the practice’s exploration of play spaces for children that began with the Ashburnham school playground in 2017, Foster + Partners, in partnership with the Bryan Adams Foundation and playground designers Made From Scratch, has revitalised a tightly bound outdoor play area in West London. The aim of the project is to heighten the myriad benefits that outdoor free play gives kids, including the development of physical, emotional, social and cognitive skills.

Merging two spaces with distinct heritages and adopting individual approaches – and understandings – of renovation for each, the architects respond to the respective building’s structural past and function, all the while rethinking conventional notions on restoration.

Located in central Takamatsu, this residence is home to a couple with one child. The client requested that the building occupy as much of the lot as possible, ensure privacy, have a built-in garage that showcased their car, and have a reinforced concrete structure with simple finishes rather than textured interiors featuring wood and other materials. We responded with a proposal that placed the living-dining-kitchen area at the center of the lot with other spaces unfolding around it onto the entire property.

Getting cancer is like embarking on a journey, you don’t know where will end. It requires strength to cope with the disease and take on the new identity as a cancer patient. Research shows that architecture can have a positive effect on people’s recovery from disease. A human scale and a welcoming atmosphere can help people to get better. Despite of this, most hospitals are hardly comfy. Just finding the way from the reception to the canteen can be difficult. If we want people to get better at our hospitals, we need to deinstitutionalize and create a welcoming healthcare. The Centre for Cancer and Health designed by Nord Architects Copenhagen does just that.
