Mile End Road Apartment Refurbishment / Vine Architecture Studio

The significant refurbishment and reconfiguration of an East London top floor apartment to re-invigorate the lost soul of the building. The existing apartment was in a state of disrepair accessed via a shared stairwell with offices below.  The project ambition was to re-imagine the proportions, arrangement and flow of this cramped flat.  We sought to rationalise the layout while retaining the intersecting load-bearing masonry walls that subdivided the space into equal quarters which, in turn, allowed us to define the four living functions of washing, dining, relaxing and sleeping.  A level change and roof valley help demarcate these interconnected spaces and provide undulating height and rhythm which is designed to animate and unite the apartment.

The office building in the center of Oberhausen combines the diverse functions of a public administrative building and rooftop garden in a new way, integrating features of both typologies. The tension between the physicality of the brick building and the delicate lightness of the greenhouse creates a new identity that affects the urban context of the Altmarkt, an important location in the city.

Located in a quarry area in the town of Unquillo, the land has numerous outcrops of stone that print the landscape a unique feature. The strategy consists of relating to this particularity by incorporating two important outcrops forming part of the domestic and intimate landscape of the house. These end up anchoring the house in the field and impact on the internal functioning of the same.
