The Atrium of Holy Angels Mausoleum is located in one of Melbourne’s major urban cemeteries, Fawkner Memorial Park in Sydney Road Fawkner, which is managed by the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust. The Trust commissioned Harmer Architecture to design the mausoleum as a fourth stage to the nearby Holy Angels Mausoleum complex also designed by Harmer Architecture. The mausoleum provides above ground burial for 672 people within in situ concrete crypts which are arranged on top of each other on 6 levels and in eight separate blocks located around a central landscaped courtyard.

Coledale, located between the Illawarra Escarpment and the Pacific Ocean, is an area undergoing gentle transformation, where miner’s cottages jostle with more recent homes. The brief asked to accommodate a creative family of four and to provide a smaller second dwelling to share the wonderful locale with extended family, friends and guests.
A nineteenth-century munitions warehouse on Governors Island in New York Harbor has opened its doors as the city’s newest venue for the arts. Spearheaded by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC), the project is the latest piece in the ongoing transformation of the island, a former military base, into a vibrant cultural destination. Pei Cobb Freed & Partners led a team that provided pro bono design services to the nonprofit LMCC to restore and renovate the nearly-150-year-old structure, situated on the island’s northern edge.
Inspired by MK27’s ‘Ipes House’, the design of the Macdonald House aims to adopt modern brutalist properties in a functional and simplistic manner. The design of the Macdonald House evolved in response to creating an open, light filled family home, while maintaining privacy on the exposed, corner site.
The primary concept for this multi-residential project is to create a sense of place using a terrace form typology reflective of its context. The council controls allowed for two stories for the area. An interpretation of ‘story’ within the council’s controls allowed for an attic form that presents to the streets as a roofing element and essentially provides for the third level in each apartment. The primary idea was to cut deep internal fissures into the building perpendicular to the street frontages to increase the surface area of light and ventilation into each dwelling.
