Arbor house in Tsurugashima / Yoshichika Takagi + associates

This is a remodeling of a wooden house in an ordinary dense residential area in Tsurugashima, Kanto region. It was built 33 years ago on a backland site that connects to the road via access of only 2 meters wide. Before remodeling, it had a small bright garden on the south side. There was a field in the neighboring land that faces the garden, where open sky could be seen. However, it was planned to be remodeled for residential development. Therefore it could be imagined that it would turn to a garden surrounded by houses, which is never a good environment.

RL residence occupies a 240sqm urban plot in Bengaluru. It is flanked by buildings on the East to the north and faces two streets on the west to south. This is a home designed for an entrepreneur and his family of young children, middle-aged relatives, and older family members. The brief, therefore, was to define a combination of spaces that respond to varying levels of privacy – including three bedrooms, semi-private family lounges, and multipurpose areas for entertainment and get-togethers.

Given its prominent positioning above a relatively developed neighborhood, the motivation behind the design of the home was to create a residence that could meld into its surroundings while maximizing views. The three-story structure, which takes on the shape of a three-winged propeller, is wrapped in glass that mirrors its sweeping views of the Los Angeles Basin, which are unobstructed from the Getty Center to Long Beach, Century City, and Downtown.
