This phrase caught my eye during Diébédo Francis Kéré‘s speech at the AAICO (Architecture and Art International Congress), which took place in Porto, Portugal from September 3 to 8. After being introduced by none other than Eduardo Souto de Moura, Kéré began his speech with the simplicity and humility that guides his work. His best-known works were built in remote places, where materials are scarce and the workforce is of the residents themselves, using local resources and techniques.

Horbelev Kulturgård / WERK

In the village of Horbelev on the island of Falster, Denmark, there was a disused school that had been appropriated by the local community and was buzzing with sporting clubs and cultural associations. Young and old made the best of the former school, the only problem; there was no large common space that could create a center for the multitude of activities and be an identifying element for the local area.
In response, WERK transformed the collection of old school buildings into a Culture House; a circular extension binds the former school buildings together in one open, accessible and common center.

Open Call: Design a Humanitarian Respite Center – Restoring Human Dignity on the Border

Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley (CCRGV), a non-profit inclusive organization, dedicated to reduce poverty and tend to the most vulnerable has teamed with Georgetown University to host a competition to design and build a permanent Humanitarian Respite Center in downtown McAllen, Texas. For four consecutive years, a temporary shelter has served nearly 100,000 immigrants seeking asylum. Welcoming them with radical hospitality, the center has helped refugees regain their dignity and has offered hope to carry on their difficult journeys ahead.
