Ocean Sciences Campus Extensions NMU / SVA International

November 2, 2022 Andreas Luco 0

The client brief called for the creation of a new ‘entrance’ building and identity for the Nelson Mandela University Ocean Sciences Campus, while also providing a series of dedicated academic spaces within a specialized research environment. The building is conceptualized as a large internal veranda space, articulated as a triple-volume, multi-layered foyer space which links the main circulation spine with the more private spaces within. The internal planning contains a number of dedicated research spaces, specialized laboratories, offices, and meeting areas as well as an eight-meter-deep diving tank used for training purposes, which also forms an integral part of the western façade articulation.

Reid Building Glasgow School of Art / Steven Holl Architects

October 15, 2022 Valeria Silva 0

The Reid Building is in complementary contrast to Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s 1909 Glasgow School of Art – forging a symbiotic relation in which each structure heightens the integral qualities of the other. Thin translucent materiality in considered contrast to the masonry of the Mackintosh building – volumes of light that express the school’s activity in the urban fabric embodying a forward-looking life for the arts. Working simultaneously from the inside out – engaging the functional needs and psychological desires of the program – and the outside in – making connections to the city campus and relating to the Mackintosh building opposite – the design embodies the school’s aspirations in the city’s fabric.

The Diwan is a year-round pavilion and event space for the University of Alberta Botanic Gardens and the final piece to complete the 4.8-hectare Aga Khan Garden, Alberta. The site of the pavilion was designated in the original concept plan for the Garden, inaugurated in 2018.  In addition to providing multi-use functionality, the pavilion was to resonate with its rich surroundings and extend the themes of the Garden, a contemporary interpretation of Islamic landscape architecture in a northern climate and context.  The pavilion was designed to complement the spirit of the Garden’s design, heritage, and experience. The term diwan has varied historical definitions, and here implies a space for meeting, cultural exchange, and celebration.

Architecture as Space, Architecture as Product – There are two major attitudes towards ‘executing architecture’: designing architecture as space and designing architecture as a product. Many architects and studios in the schools emphasize ‘architecture as space’. Taking the proverb, ‘the use of the bowl is in its void’, for example, they tend to denigrate morphism and functionalist architecture in favor of a ‘sense of place and atmosphere that is often difficult to define. However, these two attitudes are not superior, opposite, or incompatible. Those who speak of architecture as space place their weight on history, memory, tradition, context, place, and so on, and those who design architecture as a product concentrate on function, performance, form, material, technology, tectonics, and details. The architecture of the former is usually studied through perspective drawings, and the hand sketches of the architect, and the latter is usually expressed through bird’s-eye views, isometrics, and exploded drawings. Of course, the former is more interested in sensitivity and the artistic, and the latter is more interested in reason, technology, and the scientific.

Making a contemporary autogenous vernacular architecture. Resonant with the nature, architecture that mediates human and climate: Located outskirt of beautiful Baegun Mountain, the meaning of SNU Southern Forest Education & Reseach Center should not be limited to secure space for the collection of Korean native plants, propagation, conservation, research, management, exhibition, and education nor be confined to a banal green slogan “Go back to Nature” as opposed payment

September 21, 2022 Luciana Pejić 0

Jakoba Mulderhuis is situated in a striking location, on the corner of Wibautstraat and Mauritskade, and by the edge of the historical inner city on the Singelgracht canal. Together with Benno Premselahuis, a listed building on the other side of Wibautstraat, Jakoba Mulderhuis forms a gateway to the city. The high-rise structures on both sides of the street lend the setting a monumental quality that connects the architectural elements in the vicinity. Jakoba Mulderhuis comprises a slimline tower (54 meters tall, 13 stories) and a low-rise block (33 meters, 6 stories) on Mauritskade. The positioning of the tower constitutes a work of art from an urban planning perspective. Widening Wibautstraat has created a compelling entrance to the city center.
