Concrete Lace / G8A Architecture & Urban Planning

December 31, 2018 Pilar Caballero 0

Growing mysteriously from the ground, concrete columns move rhythmically, branching and wrapping four levels of the courtyard building. Concrete Lace is illuminated by the soft golden light of the setting sun, becoming a part of the skyline. Evening light shines through, interweaving between the concrete skeleton and the skyline.

“It is not the right angle that attracts me, nor the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. What attracts me is the free and sensual curve – the curve that I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuous course of its rivers, in the body of the beloved woman.”-Oscar Niemeyer.

Guesthouse Paraty / CRU! Architects

The clients required a multifunctional guesthouse where family and friends could stay over for a short vacation and the owners could also use it as a separate room to work or for the children to play. One bedroom with double and single bed and a sleeping couch sufficed, the bathroom needed to be comfortable but not too large. As the guesthouse is close to the residents’ house they wanted a soundproof barrier and enough privacy for both residents and guests.

In northern climates, the effectiveness of solar energy is greatly diminished. With the 5th highest electricity cost in the country, the requisite for solar energy is even more pronounced in Massachusetts. The unique roof geometry of the Tung House is optimized for a two-fold solution that achieves net-zero energy use: PV and hot water solar panels provide power and heating while the resulting overhangs are calibrated for summer shading and winter solar access.

Harvard HouseZero / Snøhetta

December 3, 2018 Diego Hernández 0

The Harvard Center for Green Buildings and Cities (CGBC) at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) announced today the completion of HouseZero, the retrofitting of its headquarters in a pre-1940s building in Cambridge into an ambitious living-laboratory and an energy-positive prototype for ultra-efficiency that will help us to understand buildings in new ways. The design of HouseZero has been driven by radically ambitious performance targets from the outset, including nearly zero energy for heating and cooling, zero electric lighting during the day, operating with 100 percent natural ventilation, and producing zero carbon emissions. The building is intended to produce more energy over its lifetime than was used to renovate it and throughout its subsequent operation. Snøhetta was the project’s lead architect and Skanska Teknikk Norway was the lead energy engineer.
