TerraTimber / Professorship for Digital Design & Fabrication (DDF) + Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

TerraTimber introduces an innovative method for the digital upcycling of waste wood to create circular construction systems enabling the sustainable transformation of reclaimed materials into structural elements. This approach utilizes computational tools and Augmented Reality (AR) fabrication processes to manage the complexity of diverse, non-standard waste wood materials. Starting from the generation of digital inventories through image processing, the wood pieces are then computationally assembled into large structural elements, which are finally physically assembled with nails made of wood and with the aid of AR. Earth is integrated to form a hybrid material system, enabling the construction of sustainable floor slabs from natural and recyclable materials.

The design competition for Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business called for a landmark building at a high-profile campus crossroads. The school sought to express its core values of creativity, connection, and innovation in built form and to create a place that welcomes and inspires students and staff. The design response is a beacon of visual interest that holds a tree-lined view that extends from the Rideau River to Carleton’s entry plaza and transit hub.

For the municipality of Haarlem, we have developed a design for the temporary housing of approximately 200 Ukrainian refugees. This project builds upon our research conducted for the Dutch Government Real Estate (Rijksvastgoedbedrijf) published as “Woonkwaliteitsplan FLEXwonen”. It provided us with a unique opportunity to translate theoretical insights into practical solutions, exploring and implementing the potential of high-quality, flexible housing.

Tartan School / MoDusArchitects

August 16, 2024 Pilar Caballero 0

Architecture office MoDusArchitects www.modusarchitects.com has unveiled the Tartan School, an extension to an existing school building located on the outskirts of Terlano’s town centre, nestled in the Adige Valley between the South Tyrolean cities of Bolzano and Merano. Tartan School is both a renovation of, and an intervention to, an existing school—an unwieldy 1990s U-shaped structure that had been modified in the early 2000s and that, like many small-town schools, combined a number of different programs into one. To accommodate the growing population, the township of Terlano decides to enlarge the school and opts to maintain the existing structure while adding onto it.

CNS Office / Studio Avocado

The design requirement was a minimalistic contemporary design with glass-walled spaces and rich landscaping. The client’s requirement to incorporate koi fish ponds in the landscape has been set as a priority. Instead of creating a pond amidst the landscape, an experiment was done to bring the waterbody and landscape into the design. Hence, the concept of a floating office was explored by introducing the waterbody and designing it above it. The landscaping was used as a tool to provide uniformity. To preserve the architecture of the old office as it is, but to blend it with the new office. The design has to embrace the rich green landscape into the interior spaces. Thus, adopting tropical architecture to blend the built environment and the landscape efficiently turned into a beautiful and unique office space.
