Cottonwood Canyon Experience Center / SIGNAL | Architecture + Research

April 23, 2020 Pilar Caballero 0

This story begins around the fin-de-siecle, when Jim Murtha, an Irish immigrant, partnered up with Frank Monahan to start a sheep operation at what would become known as the Murtha Ranch. Business peaked during the Great War when the army needed blankets, but life in the windy Cottonwood Canyon changed after the depression, and the barn went empty. Years later, Oregon State Parks was donated the 8,000-acre private property nestled against the John Day River.

VY ANH House / Khuon Studio

April 21, 2020 Pilar Caballero 0

Vy Anh House is conceived as a retreat where the client can enjoy their own peace after a busy working day. This idea leads to a louver system that completely covers the façade, except for an emergency exit door in the front. Though armored on the outside, the house features a lively atrium filled with sun-kissed, lush greenery.

Modern architecture has three established branches: design, structure and equipment. In recent years where environmental consideration has become a prerequisite in designing new buildings, an increased number of efforts to review regional characteristics are being put into design and equipment. However, such efforts have not yet reached the branch of structure, and buildings are usually designed based on common reason when structure was environmental architecture in and of itself before Modernism—a branch principally based on regional characteristics.

House 108 / Grieve Gillett Andersen

April 18, 2020 Pilar Caballero 0

Tucked behind the typical single storey façade of an eastern suburbs bungalow is the delightful two-storey design of House 108.  With extensive external timber cladding, large windows and strong connections to outdoor areas, House 108 feels more like a New Zealand cabin than an inner-city house in Adelaide, South Australia. The owners of House 108 engaged Grieve Gillett Andersen initially to look at improvements to the functionality of the kitchen and a living area of their house. Over time it was evident that extra space was desirable to accommodate their growing family and the owners decided to upgrade the house rather than relocate.

The house is located in one of many forgotten towns in Spain, where the small population that still remains is close to disappearing. However, it has a beautiful ruined castle and a Romanesque church. Very close to them, in a privileged location, the owner of this house decided to buy an old shed to rehabilitate it and turn it into his holiday residence. The location, a few meters from the castle, encouraged the preservation of the ancient stone walls and the design of the roof and much of the tiles of the old farmhouse.
