Berkeley Chess School was founded in 1981 as an after-school program. It has grown today to teach 7,000 children a year in the Bay Area and has produced an unmatched three grandmasters. The founder’s primary goal, however, has always been to empower children by teaching them chess, a predictor of future success in STEM subjects.

wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm Elementary School is the Vancouver School Board’s first completed school to be constructed entirely of prefabricated CLT (cross-laminated timber) panels, a material that reduces embodied carbon and makes for a calm and inspiring learning environment. The school is part of a Vancouver School Board pilot project to assess the possibilities of mass timber for future schools.
The seed for the timber school building was sown already in the architecture competition brief. The aim was to establish a school specialized in environmental education and the building was similarly supposed to illustrate the possibilities of environmentally responsible construction.
Program – Extension of an existing, partially listed school complex as a new building/extension with new surroundings. The extension contains classrooms, group rooms, a library, a new workroom and new access to the old and new buildings.
This project stemmed from the concept of repurposing a plot of land originally earmarked for the future expansion of the school, transforming it into a vibrant, lush outdoor learning environment. The vision for this new space is to offer students and teachers a variety of areas, each with unique typologies, where they can collaborate and congregate, all while immersed in greenery.
The renovation of Xuefu Middle School marks the first phase of 100 Campus Renewal Plan For Shenzhen Nanshan. By leveraging the platforms established by various departments involved in the 100 Campus Renewal Plan, this project not only addresses the outdated hardware throughout the campus but also deeply explores the playground for new typology of outdoor spaces in southern primary and secondary schools.
Pelletier de Fontenay, an architectural firm based in Montreal, in partnership with Leclerc Architects, presents École du Zénith, a project resulting from a series of competitions launched by Lab-École in 2019. Being the first school architecture competition since the 1960s, this major project marks a turning point in Quebec’s educational landscape, renewing the program, organization, and way of building primary schools in the province.
Plò architectes is a firm focusing its work on interventions in the historic centers of the Provence region in France, whether through the rehabilitation of deteriorated buildings, the creation of public spaces, or urban-scale studies. The studio’s projects aim to demonstrate the relevance of these typologies in addressing today’s and tomorrow’s ecological and climate challenges.
