House in Toyama / NYAWA

November 22, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

This is the renovation of the house in TOYAMA, a rural city in Hokuriku, JAPAN. The owner, who lives in Tokyo, decided to use this vacant house as a vacation home and vacation rental. In preserving the old houses, we focused on renewing them with as little energy as possible while incorporating the local climate and culture. By operating the house as a vacant rental, many people from outside of this region, such as Tokyo, will come and spend time in this local city. We believe these are necessary for the sustainability of the global environment and local cities. Plan with reference to Hokuriku tradition – In the traditional Hokuriku houses, there used to be a gathering space called “HIROMA.” This space was an indoor space where people could feel nature even in the cold winter season, and it functioned as a guest room.

İşbank Painting Sculpture Museum / TEGET

November 21, 2023 Valeria Silva 0

The main approach of the project can be described as taking responsibility for the three lifespans (Baudouy Apartment, 4th Sigorta Han and İşbank Painting Sculpture Museum) of the building over a century and using this layered potential. The first and main goal is to preserve a historical building with its spatial articulation, atmosphere, materials and patina, while equipping it with the technical needs of today’s contemporary museum. In other words, to propose a new multifunctional and technological core structure for the interior with structural, mechanical and electrical loads, without touching the series of interconnected rooms arranged on the façade and damaging the existing structure of this thick shell. A strong reinforced concrete structure that anchors the preserved part to the ground and contains the exhibition areas answers the main design problem. At the same time, it provides a different type of space for the museum with its high and wide galleries.

Square Tower of the Lviv Citadel / Architecture Studio Symmetry

November 3, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

Architectural Studio Symmetry recently completed work on the restoration project of the square tower of the Lviv Citadel. The tower was built in the 1850s as part of the Citadel defense complex on one of the Lviv hills. At that time, Lviv was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Venetian Arsenal was the model of the architectural style for the Austrian military construction, in particular on the objects of the Galicia-Carpathian line. The neoclassical tradition formed the basis of the romantic-medieval stylization of Austrian military buildings in the middle of the 19th century, such as the military arsenal in Vienna, the Home for the disabled in Lviv, and the Lviv Citadel.

Minagawa Village / Saisei Kenchiku Laboratory

October 26, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

Inherits the memories of four 60-year-old wooden buildings and a hand-made garden into the future. This is a revitalization(SAISEI) project of a group of wooden buildings left behind in the middle of Omotesando, Tokyo. The four buildings had been repeatedly extended and reconstructed without the certification as required by the Building Standard Law. However, there was the owner’s strong desire to keep these buildings.  The handmade garden surrounded by a group of buildings and a Tsukiyama (handmade mountain) shut out the surrounding noise and created a unique atmosphere that was both powerful and nostalgic, as if they were like a hideaway left in the middle of Omotesando, one of the most modern districts in Tokyo.
