BeiQing Experimental School Boundary Renovation / ELSE

October 11, 2023 July Shao 0

Located in Kunming, China, the project aims to redefine the entrance and boundaries of this campus. The school is a 12-year boarding school with approximately 5,000 students and teachers. The campus is in a typical Chinese urban setting, surrounded by residential blocks mostly built in the early 2000s. However, as is typical for campuses, existing walls separate the school from the surrounding community, creating a small, inward-looking, self-sufficient community. Due to changes in land use and road reconfiguration, the original main entrance will no longer be usable.

This project is a combination of renovation and new construction. The site is in a suburban residential area with a mix of old and new houses. The main house, an annex, a workshop, and a warehouse were built by the owner’s father, a carpenter, during his lifetime. These had been enlarged and remodeled at least four times. The plan called for converting the annex and workshop into a residence for the son, who is the owner, and his family, and for maintaining the family’s lifestyle while keeping an adequate distance from the main house where the mother lives.

Jean Macé School / SOL architecture and urbanism

October 8, 2023 Paula Pintos 0

Trappes is a French suburban city located in the great area of Paris, with a large part of the population suffering from poverty and undergoing major changes in its built environment. To be able to accommodate its growing population, the city initiated the revitalization of its facilities, including schools. The Jean Macé complex is a great example of French school buildings from the end of the 60s. The city commission included the thermic rehabilitation of facades, the reorganization of uses and flow, and two extensions to accommodate new classrooms and a new leisure canter. Taking this as a starting point our objective was also to embrace the potential of the school and make it a safe and stimulating building for children with an emphasis on local and bio-sourced material and thermic efficiency.

Helvetia is the alteration and renovation of a double-storey Victorian terrace in Fitzroy, Melbourne. The home had been separated in the 1960s to operate as a boarding house and reconfigured again in the 1980s into two apartments. Muddled, confused, dark, and in a sad state of disrepair, the challenge was to resurrect Helvetia.

October 4, 2023 Pilar Caballero 0

The Fit Apartment deviates from the standard of many residential projects already carried out by the office, with a completely integrated character: Except for the bathroom, all walls have been eliminated, creating a continuous circulation through the social area, kitchen, office, and master bedroom. The proposal came from the owners’ desire to create a sensation of more spaciousness in the 60m2 apartment.

Inside Outside Room / l’atelier Nomadic Architecture Studio

October 3, 2023 Pilar Caballero 0

The project started with a wish from the client to create more space for the living floor of their house. The 1,5-meter level difference between the living room and the garden, which was at first seen as a constraint, became a source of inspiration to create a large room at the floor level of the garden but at the ceiling level of the living floor, integrating both spaces, but keeping them separate at the same time
