The Warsaw Citadel of Museums. Work on the architectural design of the Polish History Museum at the Warsaw Citadel began back in 2016. The project was commissioned by Polish architectural design studio WXCA, which in 2009 won the international architecture and urban design competition for the new headquarters of the Polish Army Museum, planned to be located on the 19th-century fortress site. Thus, as in other European metropolises, a museum complex concept was brought to life in Warsaw – the Citadel of Museums, conceived to be a community-building public space dedicated to culture, remembrance, as well as everyday recreation and leisure.

Hong Museum is an experimental art institution dedicated to combining sociological thinking and contemporary art. The museum is in Zhi-xin Plaza at the city center of Wenzhou. Hong Museum is located in a 255-meter high tower, designed by John Portman, where the Westin Hotel sits atop with Portman’s classical internal soaring atrium with strong verticality. The design of the Hong Museum unfolds horizontally within an entire floor at lower level, transforming the mundane, standard typical floor, usually for office use, into a uniquely characterized art space. The design aims to create a status with porosity among the accurately and economically planned commercial urban interior space and allowing art and sociology topics to enter the public sphere.

In the early morning of winter, the ancient town is always shrouded in mist. You can vaguely see the distant mountains on the other side of the Yangtze Rive. Lizhuang, as the cultural center during the Anti-Japanese War, gathered people with lofty ideals and cultural celebrities from all over the country. As the sun rises, the mist gradually lifts and a new day full of energy begins.

We often say that there are only two types of museums: a museum in the park, embedded in the tranquility of nature, and a museum in the city, implanted within the energy of urbanism. The Buffalo AKG Art Museum is both. It sits at the northern edge of the historic Delaware Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The city is known for its history of industrial revolution and the current revitalization of remnants from that past. It has a rich architectural history—from silos and manufacturing facilities to buildings by Eero Saarinen, Louis Sullivan, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Polish Army Museum / WXCA + Buro Happold

The project connects the history of the city, and the country as a whole, with the contemporary urban context. The museum site occupies 32 hectares of the Warsaw Citadel, a hilltop fortress built in the 1830s by the army of the Russian Empire. The Citadel was used by the Polish military and has been a restricted area, until now. Buro Happold worked closely with WXCA to reinvigorate the site, which overlooks the Vistula River and is separated from the city by an embankment. The Polish Army Museum building, together with the Museum of the 10th Pavilion of the Warsaw Citadel and the Katyń Museum, stands alongside the soon-to-be-built Museum of Polish History, collectively forming one of Europe’s largest museum complexes. The Polish Army Museum project is part of Buro Happold’s extensive, ongoing engagement with the changing urban landscape of Warsaw.
